Commercial Description:
This fantastic brew began its life as "Charlie", the third installment of the Brewer’s Select Series. It is now part of our seasonal lineup and will be released in the month of January. It is an intricate dark ale with a touch of smokiness. The rich malt flavor, crisp bitterness and smoke reach perfect equilibrium in this brew. At 7.5% abv, Fireside Ale will warm you up as the temperature drops.

12oz bottle. Brown pour with a medium off-white head. Smoky aroma with malt and caramel. Sweet and smoky caramel flavor. Good smoke flavor without tasting like ham.

Bottle. Pours deep dark amber with thin and foamy tan head. Aroma is slightly smokey with hops and spice. Flavor starts with smoke and raspberry, finishes slightly bitter with faint hops and caramel. Warms as it goes down, medium mouthfeel with moderate carbonation. Decent.

on tap at Taco Mac, Crabapple. Deep brown (not sure what the head looked like when poured) in color. Some caramel, sugar and malt on the nose. I don’t get a lot of smoke on this one - it is more rich in dark fruit, sugar, yeast and caramel. It is slightly warming, but not worthy of the name. I enjoyed this one, but not something I would seek out.

Bottle. Poured a chestnut color with a thin off-white head. Pretty balanced malty smokey flavor. Also picked up some nutty caramel earthiness. I probably would of rated it higher if it were more heavily smoked.

THOUGHTS: I didn’t like this at first, but it grew on me. Drink it without too much of a chill to get the best flavor. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, dark, red that was bright red in the light. It had an average, off-white head that mostly diminished, but left good lacing. The aroma was nice but a little weak. There was moderate caramel malt, a little barbecue sauce type smokiness. There was a great balance between the smoke and the malt. The initial flavor was sweet and a little bitter; while the finish was sort of sour, sweet and bitter with an average to long duration. There was caramel malt, and smokiness similar to barbecue sauce. The light to medium body was slightly syrupy with lightly fizzy carbonation and a slightly metallic, lightly astringent and a little bit smokey finish.

On tap at Rattle n Hum a couple weeks ago (from scribbled notes). Called "Charlie". Dark brown with lasting head and lace. Mild smoky brown sugar bready aroma. Medium smoky caramel brown sugar ripe fruity aleness with mild bitter finish and lingering smoke. Well blended with noticeable smoke. Enjoyable despite the fruity mid-section. Nice effort.
