| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Feb 20, 2009 Pours a copper tan with a one finger frothy light tan head. The nose is smoky, caramel, sweet, leafy hops, smells like a smoked marzen. The flavor is smoky, spicy, crisp hop bite, mild metallic bitterness, smoke comes through, corn, some caramel sweetness. Crisp on the mouthfeel with a metallic bite. crazyvin (1254), New York, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 19, 2009 Poured a dark copper hue with a tan head that had good retention and beautiful lacing. Aroma was mild but nice, some sweet malt notes and of coarse a caramel note. Flavor was subtly balanced. Some hops, some malts. It seriously could have used more smoke to it. Finish was dry. puzzl (2648), New York, New York, USA
| 3.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Feb 18, 2009 Bottled. Moderate smoke and lemon, pine aroma. Thin, milky, lactic and crappy flavor, with a minor hop note. Little smoke in the flavor to be found. Quite bad. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I wish brewers would stop pussying out with the smoke and actually make some smoky beers. They aren’t afraid to make 13% barrel aged imperial stouts that taste like a mixture of chocolate syrup, bourbon, and mud, so why can’t they just make a legitimately smoky beer? nearbeer (1863), Knoxville, Tennessee, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 17, 2009 12 oz. Clear, copper-brown with an enduring quarter-inch of creamy foam. Mild aroma of dark toasted pecan and molasses, with maybe a whiff of chocolate and smoke. Initial flavor is similar plus a little acidic-sour tinge, then a woody finish that fades into some subtle smoke. Further into the bottle, the smoke shows up a bit more, as well as in the long aftertaste. Medium-heavy body is dryish and very smooth. Nice. jthg (68), Austin, Texas, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 13/20 | Feb 17, 2009 above good beer. The first sip is malty, and then after a couple swallows, a smokey taste develops. Not much aroma. The beer finishes smooth. jcwattsrugger (5567), Florida and, New Jersey, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Feb 16, 2009 12oz bottle-pours a cascading rich light tan head with heavy lacing and deep red color. Aroma is rich malt, smoke, some dark fruit, earthy hops. Taste is rich malt-brown sugar, nutty/smoke, some dark fruit, earthy hops. Minimum carbonation but nice mouth feel. A nicely done, enjoyable beer. Thanks jwc215 for picking this out. blipp (1714), Newark, New Jersey, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Feb 15, 2009 Bottle. Pours deep amber red with a beige head. Malty sweet with a hint of smoke. The flavor has a solid sweet caramel malt base, with some light toasty/roasty undertones. Nicely balanced notes of smoke and burnt wood are up front but not in an overly intrusive way. Very drinkable. juiceisloose (671), Windermere, Florida, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Feb 15, 2009 Pours a dark caramel brown color with some reddish tint at the edges. A small and foamy beige head settles to a thin film on top leaving some sudsy lacing behind. The aroma shows notes of toasted grains, sweet caramel, and a touch of earthy smoke. The flavor is good bit more smokey with some roasted malt and toasted grains followed by a chocolate and caramel malt backbone. Some smoked wood and earthy flavors round this one out. Medium bodied with good carbonartion and a very smooth and balanced mouthfeel. The smoke and roasty flavors linger awhile on the finish. Not overly smokey, but a tasty brew for sure. Nice beer to drink when grilling out.
