Big alcohol/sweet aroma. I was wondering what that aroma was, and it is WHISKEY! Hell ya, I love the vanilla aroma with the sweet whiskey smell. The flavor is VERY good. If you love imperial stouts mixed with the bourbon/whiskey flavor(s), then you will love this beer. Very strong whiskey/roast taste that develops into a sweet whiskey/vanilla flavor. This beer is amazing, and I love the flavor. I think this could have a better palate and a stronger aroma, but the flavor is spot on. Juelze (923), Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Mar 11, 2009 Pours a dark brown color with thin mocha head. Aroma is light vanilla, mild coffee, light chocolate and light fusel alcohol. Taste is is alcohol, some vanilla, notes of dark fruit, light coffee, whiskey, light cherry and light oak. This beer is a bit brash for me and doesn’t give the richness I expect from an impy, but it isn’t bad, just not up to snuff for what I expect from the style. minch25 (370), Columbus, Ohio, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Mar 11, 2009 Dark brown to black, medium mocha head. Aroma of milk and oak barrel, nothing fancy, and just a hint of vanilla. Incredibly smooth texture, and nicely carbonated. Very oaky flavor, dry, the wood just sucks the moisture out of your mouth. Low-medium levels of sweetness and roast; this seems to be all about the oak. To its credit, this is overall a pretty clean imperial stout, with some muscle imparted by the oak. The only disappointment if you can call it that is that there isn’t that much more going on besides. Avengedpoet (325), Mesa, Arizona, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 2/5 | 14/20 | Mar 10, 2009 Thanks to rustychiles for sharing at the bockyhorsey tasting. Jet black beer with no head. Aroma is predominantly alcohol, roasted grain, bourbon, and diacetyl. Taste is quite roasty with some minor oak and bourbon, as well as a hint of the butterscotch-like diacetyl. Just enough to compliment, but not overwhelm. However, on the palate the butteriness really accumulates to an annoying level, and the beer was a bit over carbonated for my taste. All around interesting and good beer. lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 15/20 | Mar 7, 2009 Pours black with a short lived light tan head. Smell is chocolate. Taste is a mix of milk and dark chocolate that is semi sweet but finishes without a lingering maltiness. Some light oak flavor too. Body is oily, slightly sticky and with soft carbonation. Pretty enjoyable and not a very bourbony or overdone bourbon barrel beer. chandler0201 (358), Durham, North Carolina, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | Mar 4, 2009 Pours opaque brown with surprisingly large tan head. Pungent aroma of chocolate, coffee, and some vanilla notes, and flavor of chocolate and coffee, some dried fruits, got a hint of cranberry. Thick but worth it, excellent version of style. | 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 1, 2009 On tap at Stougies and Stouts at the Dunedin brewery. Pours dark brown with infra red edges, full mocha head and spotty lacing. The aroma is mild with a little bit of oak, a little bit of roast, a hint of molasses and little else. The taste is sweet, malty and mild molasses then turning toward a little bit of oak by midway and more sweetness. It has sweet aroma and pretty darn sweet flavor from sweet malts and sweet sugary molasses. Into the finish some roasty malts, mildly burnt malts and a sense of coffee join faint oak, a bit of vanilla and just detectable alcohol chemical notes that rise up and close out the experience. bubbleflubber (903), Collinsville, Virginia, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Feb 27, 2009 Gorgeous brew here. Pours opaque black into the glass, with a generous tan head that leaves nice lace. Immediately upon cracking the seal, I was greeted with an abundant chocolate nose.... very well-done. The flavors are similar in tow, with deep chocolate hues (multi-faceted), sweet malts, roasts, hints of dried cherries and dark fruits toward the finish.... which culminates in a whisky-esque, licorice mouthfeel that feels like tobacco soaked in vanilla extract. ABV couldn’t be better integrated, and this is certainly one fine Impy Stout that I was happy to enjoy!
