Commercial Description:
This is an incredibly intriguing ale is made by aging our Old Heathen Imperial Stout in oak barrels that were used for making fine Kentucky bourbon! The result is an extraordinary, dark, and mysterious stout whose very essence has been enhanced. The aroma is filled with vanilla, cocoa, and roasted coffee beans. This silky-smooth brew has notes of oak, whiskey, roasted barley and vanilla that meld together on the tongue to create an incredible sensation. Heresy is released in February.

Bottle...pitch black pour with a rocky tan head. Very dry, oaky nose on this with the usual suspects of dark fruits, dark malts and dark chocolate. What separates this is the woodsiness that imparts itself so wonderfully though. Full body, sticky and oily. Dark chocolate, black cherries and some vanilla bean noted in the flavor...finishes dry and woodsy.

Bottle. Aroma of oak!, chocolate, roasted malt. Flavor again of oak! with a solid, chocolaty stout base. The oak seems to have taken much of the roastiness out of this one. Not overly interesting, but tasty oak and tasty chocolate make it a good one.

22 oz. bottle - thanks to bvc for sharing; thin, jet black with roasty aromas of oak, vanilla, chocolate and tons of sweetness; thin texture and drinks warm and fuzzy; caramel, chocolate and lots of oak make for quite a sweet stout; very nice overall

Bottle. Pours black with a thick, chocolate colored head. Aroma predominantly of oak. Quite woody! Flavor of more oak, some chocolate, and some roasted malt. Not bad but this is heavily oaked. It was better than I had expected. 7/4/7/4/15 (3.7/5)

[12oz bottle] Pours dark brown with a tiny brown head that reduces to nothing quite quickly. The first smell I got of this left me pretty confident that it was going to be good. Raisins, plum, brown sugar, chocolate, a little oak (this came out more as it warmed). Excellent. Taste was anise, a lot of chocolate, roasted malt, and a bit of alcohol. Not hugely complex, but very good. Mouthfeel could stand to be just a little bit thicker, but still is quite good and has a really nice, long finish that is reminiscent of a brownie. Fairly smooth. One of the best smelling beers that I have had in awhile, and overall very well done. I had a bomber of this later and found it to be vastly inferior, but when I went back to the store that had the 12oz bottles, I was rewarded with another gem. The second time around with the 12oz bottle version the aroma was not quite as exquisite as before, but it was incredibly smooth. I will have to try a few more to see just how variable this beer is.

12oz bottle from a trade awhile back. poured right next to old heathen for comparison.... pours close to black with a thin light tan head that stuck around longer than its sibling.... aroma lightly burnt wood, chocolate, and bourbon notes.... flavors of chocolate, vanilla, and bourbon upfront and then almost a sour roasty fruitiness aspect to it that finishes it off. a sweeter more assertive chocolate flavor might have worked better for it. but i digress. still a pretty silky smooth mouthfeel and hides the abv well.
