| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Apr 21, 2008 12 oz. bottle. Pours pitch black with foamy, dark khaki head, two fingers that dissipates to about a half-finger rather quickly. Nose is lots of roast and touch of alcohol, slight oak and bourbon with a touch of dark fruit and maybe some anise. Taste is alcohol hot, bourbon-esque at that with some moderate roast and lots of sweet, dark fruit. A bit thin and watery, but roasty througout with dark plum and raisin towards the end that’s quickly taken over by some bourbon/oaky notes, then alcohol straight to the finish and well into the after. It’s burny. In the words of santoslhalper, It’d be good. . . .in 2015. Needs to chill out a bit and mellow. Decent, though. GriffinAvenue (396), Winchester, Massachusetts, USA
| 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 10/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Apr 21, 2008 Bottle. Molasses thick black coloring. No head, save for a tannish white faint ring around the glass. Bourbon, malty, fudge, more Jim-Beam than I would have expected owing to the oak barrels. wow on flavoring. 3 part assault. Thin to light body pours easy in the mouth. Tongue and roof of the mouth are malty, cocoa, faint pinot noir, dates notes, while nostrils exhale a potent bourbon licorice combo. impressive and a new favorite. craftbeerdesign (754), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA

You do pick up the oak on the finish at the very end. Much better than the Old Heathen. Pwn3d (1073), Manhattan, New York, USA

Beautiful pour true brown head over a black body - nice lacing, suds stick to the side of the glass. Oak barrel aging is noticeable and the malt and chocolate complement it nicely. Finishes bitter. | 4.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 19/20 | Apr 15, 2008 Bottle. Magnificent pour. Midnight black with a towering inferno of tight, tan foam, slowly picking up little pock marks. The aroma is wickedly infused with whiskey. Drinks with a thick syrupy consistency. While the whiskey burn is surely there in the drink, it’s not so overpowering as to scare the uninitiated. Instead, it’s nicely maintained within this richly roast, lightly coffeed, robustly chocolatey brew. Beauty! (#3423, 4/15/2008) surffisher (196), Raleigh, North Carolina, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Apr 13, 2008 12 oz. 2006 bottle. Pour opaque but clear dark brown with ruby highlights and a modest splotchy head that leaves spotty lacing. Aroma is soft and woody with chocolate, whiskey, vanilla and cigar smoke notes. Dusty smoky flavor, with some cocoa and vanilla notes. Full-bodied and very smooth, with moderate carbonation and just some slight alcohol. Very nice, although the oak/vanilla character could perhaps be more subtle. railcat1 (582), Orlando, Florida, USA
