sfontain (500), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jan 14, 2005 Updated: Jan 3, 2007 2007-01-03: 22 oz bomber. Deep black, but not so thick as to let no light through at all; initially has a huge, dark brown, rocky head that, quite unfortunately, becomes a really tiny ring of froth carbonation; virtually no lacing. Upon first opening the bottle I got a good whiff of alcohol; once the beer warms up sufficiently, the aroma is predominantly sour with dark fruits and caramel; noticeable but not overwhelming bourbon and vanilla. Flavor is less interesting than I recalled, but still very good; bourbon is lighter than I remember; chocolate, vanilla; almost no roast and very little hops, which I find spectacular. Mouth feel is thick and silky and just great; if I had one complaint, it’s that I wish it were just the tiniest bit thicker. This beer suffers terribly at anything lower than room temperature; chilled, it’s average at best, with mostly just chocolate characteristics; but there is a magical temperature at which is quickly and suddenly opens up and exudes a whole new character. 8/4/8/5/16 = 4.1
2005-01-14: Small sample from bomber at From the Vine beer tasting in Lewis Center, Ohio. Opaque black; big head. Aroma HEAVY vanilla and bourbon. Flavor HEAVY vanilla, along with chocolate and whiskey; like a bigger Anchor Porter with whiskey. Thick and sticky. Nice. 9/4/8/4/16 = 4.1
patrick767 (1406), fort wayne, Indiana, USA Sep 7, 2008 bottle - Pours black with a thin tan head. It smells of bourbon and dark roast malt. The flavor is much the same along with a hint of vanilla. The balance is good and it has a full body. This beer is quite tasty though I tend to agree with the view that there’s just something missing to make it a truly great brew. padrefan98 (602), (San Diego) Santee, California, USA Sep 2, 2008 #600 Shared with friends and family on a beautiful Labor Day barbeque at my house. Thanks to dmac for this one. Flavors of wood, some whiskey and lots of malted bitter chocolate. Very good. thornecb (1074), Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA Aug 28, 2008 Pours black into a snifter. Mocha head with medium retention leaves slight lacing as it recedes. Cobwebbed oak and bourbon aromas. Upfront sweet bourbon and a little thin. Becomes more creamy if you swish a little. Oak, vanilla and bourbon in the finish. JCB (1016), Durham, North Carolina, USA Aug 26, 2008 22oz from Sam’s, Durham. While I’m generally a fan of Weyerbacher’s oak aging, this one falls just short of the mark for me. An inky pour but with very little evident carbonation, this portends a thin mouthfeel. Nicely rich malty notes of chocolate in the nose, with just a touch of that vanilla that dominates W’s oak-aged beers. I dig that just fine, but the beer is very thin. You can detect the play of oak, vanilla, and roasted malts every so slightly, but the beer sort of works its way down - as if through a funnel - until you get a single note in the finish, thin and slightly syrupy. A decent imperial stout, but there are dozens out there that are far better. 00cobraR (953), Greensboro, North Carolina, USA Aug 26, 2008 Pours out a black color with a small brown head. Aroma is full of roasted malt with a nice slightly fruity scent to it. Flavor was robust with notes of oak, choco, and vanilla. Over all a fantastic brew.
