Commercial Description:
Insanity, first released November 2004, is Weyerbacher's latest creation in the world of cutting edge beers. Insanity is made by aging our perfectly balanced Blithering Idiot Barleywine in oak bourbon casks. This incredible combination creates a melange of flavors such as malt, dates, oak, vanilla, and bourbon just to name a few.

Nice dark reddish/brown in color. Small head that fades away rather quickly. The beer is translucent. Failry good appearance. Sweet and sour bourbon aroma. Very pungent aroma. The aroma is nice, and I can tell the beer was aged in bourbon barrels. This is the second Weyerbacher beer that I have had that has a strong aroma/flavor of bourbon. It is very nice! Awesome sweet wood/bourbon smell. Alcohol is noticeable. A very sweet and malty barley wine with a heavy vanilla/bourbon-type sweetness. This is something new that I have had in a barley wine, as far as flavor is concerned. Very strong flavor. Could be used as wouthwash. Nice sweet sugary tasting beer. The beer has a nice palate. I am getting more and more drunk as I am writing this so it ends with, good beer with a lot of alcohol that has an awesome bourbon flavor.

Bottle thanks to Tony at OTH: Poured a orange brown with a thin white head. Aroma is coconut, oak, and bourbon. Taste is dark fruit and coconut, soft bourbon and oak notes as well.

Courtesy of Tony @ OTH. Another insane strike by Weyerbacher. This beer is pure goodness. Pours hazy orange with beige head. Aroma had a good coconut nose with like wood oak chips for a light bourbon addition. Taste is similar, boozy, coconut/vanilla, bourbon, some dark fruits, malts some hops in the finish. Overall the addition of oak bourbon makes this one, an awesome offering.

650 bottle at BA Decadence line tasting. Pours a dark brown color with an ample tan head. The aroma was of boozy oak. The taste was similar to the aroma, lots of boozy oak with hints of dark fruits around the sides. The mouthfeel was smooth and full. The finish was moderate with lingering alcohol. Overall: Just a bit too much distracting alcohol showing thru.

12oz bottle thanks to MrChopin. Pours murky brown with nice light tan head. Aroma is caramel, bourbon, alcohol, brown sugar, sweet malt, figs and other dark fruits. Flavor is dark fruit, oak, bourbon, raisans and figs, alcohol, toffee and some vanilla. Nice mouthfeel. Lots of booze with bourbon and oak. This is going to push me over the edge. Pretty good barley wine and barrel has given some nice complexity. Glad this comes in 12oz bottles.

Big thanks to JB175 for the bottle. Pours a murky burnt caramel color with a smallish head that fades quickly. Aroma has sweet caramel malts, brown sugar, more brandy than bourbon, and cherries. Somewhat like taking a whiff inside a freshly opened box of chocolates. Man is this stuff thick. There’s a bit of hops coming through, but this one’s packed with sweet malts and has a moderate alcohol burn. Weird thing is, I think the color of the brew threw me off - it tastes much darker than it looks. No shame in its 11.5%, either - a couple of sips, and you can tell you’re in for it. Definitely glad I got to try this one!

22oz bottle from Kevin at out Monday Tasting. This beer is a bit of a mess. Great nose with alcohol, caramel, figs, cherries and chocolate. Hops are not welcome here. The taste of this beer is incredibly unbalanced in a way that makes it very hard to drink. Insanely sweet, the flavors are there. I could get cherry and caramel the most but the booze is so strong. It seems way stronger than it is and it finishes with a honey note that makes it seem almost like a mead. This needs work and it could be great. I love malty barley wines but its hard to do them right (Dark Island Reserve, Midnight Sun Artic Devil and Lost Abbey Angel’s Share are good examples). No hints of the oak aging either.
