Commercial Description:
Insanity, first released November 2004, is Weyerbacher's latest creation in the world of cutting edge beers. Insanity is made by aging our perfectly balanced Blithering Idiot Barleywine in oak bourbon casks. This incredible combination creates a melange of flavors such as malt, dates, oak, vanilla, and bourbon just to name a few.

Orange brown body with a thinner off white head. Aromas of vanilla, caramel, oak, and bourbon. Very smooth palate with more oakiness and even a creamy dessert sweetness. Quite complex even though it’s not my favorite.

This one looks really good with a dark ruby appearance and a lasting tan head. Vanilla aroma with lots of dark fruit. Full-bodied with perfect carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel. Flavor is not overly sweet and has a lot of raisin, caramel, vanilla and plum. There is also a booziness that isn’t really hot, but sweet and tasty. This is a great barleywine and a nice break from some of the hugely hopped BW’s i’ve been rating lately.

Each time I have a Weyerbacher beer, I wish they would get a distributor out here in California. Until then, I’ll have to continue to rely on the kindness of others to supply my needs. This is a fantastic barleywine and one that I would gladly plunk down money time and again if it were available to me daily. A blessedly sweet aroma, full of dried fruit, caramel, brown sugar, vanilla, bourbon and alcohol. Flavor has an incredibly array of flavors to choose from. Caramel, vanilla, bourbon, alcohol, vinous, light roast, brown sugar....just a fantastic barleywine.

Bottle. Moderate malt notes of roasted and caramel, orange for the hops, light leather and earth for the yeast, with hints of pina colada, date, current and red wine. Head is small, starts frothy and turns wispy, off-white with good lacing and legs, and is mostly diminishing. Color is hazy medium red/brown. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes moderately sweet and lightly bitter. Palate is medium to full, oily, with a soft carbonation and a moderately alcoholic finish. Great balance and a ton of really unique aromas makes this one of the better Barley Wines I’ve had.

Dark ruby with small head. Big toasted marshmallow and alcohol aroma. Very sweet and hot, with nice rich malt, vanilla bean, wood, and a long sweet finish.

This one runs a little hot. Fruit, sweet malt, but there’s more alcohol in the aroma and the flavor than is needed. I’ve had plenty of beers this strong that handled their alcohol better.

Bottle thanks to blutt59. Pours a dark yellow-amber color. Smell is light caramel, alcohol and sweet malts. Taste is the same for the most part, but alcohol less detectable in the taste. No hops in this one to speak of, and the palette has an odd linger I can’t describe.
