Commercial Description:
Insanity, first released November 2004, is Weyerbacher's latest creation in the world of cutting edge beers. Insanity is made by aging our perfectly balanced Blithering Idiot Barleywine in oak bourbon casks. This incredible combination creates a melange of flavors such as malt, dates, oak, vanilla, and bourbon just to name a few.

Cool label. Pours trhe color of iced tea with a thin tan head. Aroma of some fruit, whiskey, caramel and vanilla. Let this warm a bit and the flavors really pop while the alcohol warms. Flavor of caramel, malt, whiskeyfinishing with raisin and brown sugar and warming alcohol. Very intoxicating!

12oz bottle. Hazy, tea color with tan head. Aroma of alcohol and cotton candy. Fairly full bodied. Oak and vanilla flavors most evident up front, with some hops showing up later to balance thigs out.

(Bottle) Lable is very nice! Shady orange color, small white head. Low sweet with a dominant alcohol scent. Some non-stored cheese. Thick mouthfeel. Sweet taste that keeps going and going and... The sweetness is a regular Energizer Beer! (ehr, Bunny...) Smell is also grainy low quality scotch blended whisky, is it the oak character perhaps? Low bitterness. Rather dry. A bit salty and buttery.

Pours a beautiful brown-red that is completely hazy, with a tan head that fades to a cap. High amount of settled particulates. Wood and caramel sweetness in the nose, with slight alcohol. Taste is muddled, the only real descriptors I want to definitively make out are sweet and alcoholic. Caramel and toffee maltiness, very low hop profile for me on this one. Very hot at points. Perhaps one of the thickest beers I’ve ever had on the tongue. Maybe I just am not a big fan of barley wines but this didn’t sit particularly well with me.

Bomber courtesy of and shared with gputty. Murky orange with a creamy tan head. Fruity, almost candylike sweet nose, mild whisky and vanilla notes. Thick tan lacing. Sweetly malty, rich fruit, woody, with some white grape tones.Sweet finish bites with alcohol in the very end - very good!

Bottle: Cloudy orange with particles and a light tan head, slight whiskey aroma with some brown sugar, full rich body, starts lightly sweet and ends sweet. A better than average barley wine.

(06.19.06) One pint 6 oz brown bottle from Thaichile. Hazy red amber with small white head. Soft carbonation. Rruity spicy sweet malt aroma. Full-bodied Oak-barrel aged barleywine that starts with light malt sweetness and caramel/oak wood/ fruity (grapes)/brown sugar flavors. Definite alcohol warmth. Finished with light hop bitterness. Smooth, well-balanced and full of flavors. Alcohol well hidden. Simply delicious. Thanks Thaichile!

Very similar appearance to the Blithering Idiot (duh). Opaque copper without much head and not as much lacing as I expected. A lot of floaties suspended in the viscous fluid. Big bourbon aroma and taste up front, kind of harsh at first but it mellows out with time and patience. Very dry finish. As it warms up it develops more character. Sweet flavors like toffee, peaches and dried apricots begin to evolve. No barley wine should be consumed hastily and this is no exception.
