Commercial Description:
Insanity, first released November 2004, is Weyerbacher's latest creation in the world of cutting edge beers. Insanity is made by aging our perfectly balanced Blithering Idiot Barleywine in oak bourbon casks. This incredible combination creates a melange of flavors such as malt, dates, oak, vanilla, and bourbon just to name a few.

Cherry-amber body with almost no off-white head, nose is bing cherries with vanilla, boubon, and malty notes, and flavor shows cherries, plums, and bourbon (alcohol)! Does not hide the alcohol very well.

Disappointed in the case I got. Blithering Idiot tasted better. Thought this was aged in bourbon cask. Disappointing but a good night cape none the less.

22 oz, $8. Great looking ale. Nose of malts, whiskey, and a little yeast. Taste is simple and astringent at the same time. Bourbon is obvious, but other than malts there isn’t too much to this, maybe a slight hint of vanilla, maybe. Far from average, but no improvement over the original platform. Keller’s IGA in Cinci, OH.

Thanks Volgon for sharing this! Beautiful aroma, beautiful deep dark color. Earthy malty whiskey tastes while remaining very refreshing. Great stuff!

bomber-pours deep amber with a sudsy off-white head. big vanilla at first wiff followed by notes of dark fruit, lighly vineous tone with quite a bit of butterscotch (like the other barrel aged weyerbacher brews). flavors are mostly vanilla and dark fruits with a touch of toffee. not all that complex, but not bad and much better than the blithering idiot. the bourbon actually masks the alcohol quite nice unlike the idiot. A decent barleywine.

12 oz bottle. This one pours more of a orange-reddish color...a bit lighter than Blithering Idiot though still opaque. The head is a bit more bubbly but not much with about the same amount of retention. The aroma holds all the bourbon barrel qualities: vanilla, oak , and coconut perhaps with a bit of caramel malt and rasin. The flavor gets a good bit of the same, coconut, some vanilla , lots of caramel malt, alchohol...maybe a touch of dark fruit. Not as thick as Blithering Idiot, though a bit smoother throughout with more burn in the finish...the alcohol seems more present overall...even though it feels more appropriate. Sweet and alcoholic makes for a pretty great brew overall...though I still can’t help but to wonder who does their awful label art work?

Bottle (650ml). Shared with Dave B. Poured clear deep copper with an average lasting straw head. Aroma of oak, vanilla, bourbon, alcohol and sweet malt. Tastes of oaky sweet bourbon, alcohol burn, decent but a little thin - a real ear-warmer - sweet. Average body, quick finish, alcoholic , woody, smooth. Really nice, I think I may like the regular Blithering Idiot more.
