Commercial Description:
Insanity, first released November 2004, is Weyerbacher's latest creation in the world of cutting edge beers. Insanity is made by aging our perfectly balanced Blithering Idiot Barleywine in oak bourbon casks. This incredible combination creates a melange of flavors such as malt, dates, oak, vanilla, and bourbon just to name a few.

22oz bottle shared at my brother-in-law’s house. Pours amber and quite cloudy with a tan head that stayed pretty well and laced down the glass. Aroma is light caramel, a touch of vanilla, and some mild hops. Flavor starts out quite sweet, some caramel, oak, vanilla, then you are smacked by the sudden burn and strength of the alcohol in this brew. Smooth palate until the finish which is quite alcoholic.

From bottle. Pours a murky orange brown with an off white head and floaters. Nose has oak, vanilla, spice, brown sugar and a little alcohol. Flavor follows nose but blends them together with a lingering taste of bourbon. An excellent use of bourbon cask aging and MUCH better then Blithering Idiot.

This was actually the first barley wine I had ever tasted.Poured out a reddish brown with a small head.Aromas of malt and a slight hint of bourbon. The taste was caramel and malty and very smooth.Good.

This was the worst beer at the Hell With the Lid Off Barleywine Tasting by far. It was a cloudy amber color with some significant lacing. Aroma was a dried fruit, sugar, alcohol, and chemical cleaner. Tasted a bit worse than robitussin...cloyingly sweet, roasty malt, artificial carmel candy. The mouthfeel was very syrupy. I’d rather drink Blither Idiot for the rest of the month than have to finish another 4oz of this.

NB: This is based on an unfiltered bottle that was never relesed commercially. Pours a dark cloudy brown orange with almost no head. Strong strong aroma of bourbon and malts. Strong sweet taste with lots of woody notes. Very thick body. Thanks Kinz!

Unlabled bottle courtesy of Kinz. This bottle was an unfiltered version of the Insanity. Dark amber color with a thin white head. Aroma of caramel and bourbon. Strong malt aromas linger behind the amazing bourbon aroma. Flavors of brown sugar and caramel with some bourbon hints.

Unfiltered - Not commercially released -- Thanks for this one Kinz!. Excellent burbon aroma with definate yeast overtones that aren’t evident in the normal Insanity. Cloudiness is very similar to the Decadence, again... different from the regular Insanity. Nice and cool taste, malts are evident. Great burbon burn in the ending. It’s sad this was not released publicly this way.

Unfiltered - Not commercially released -- 4/19/08 update
7/4/7/5/14 = 3.7 Caramel sweet aroma, light oaking left. Very sweet taste, nice warming effect. Complexity is past and diluted. Some dark fruits left. Past it’s prime, but still very good.

Normal Release -- 7/3/9/4/16 = 3.9
Golden brown body with a thin ivory head. Heavy burbon oaking in the arom, sweet malts with light hops. Smooth taste, oak notes, caramel, honey. Smooth and sweet ending , though it could be due to some ageing.
