Commercial Description:
Insanity, first released November 2004, is Weyerbacher's latest creation in the world of cutting edge beers. Insanity is made by aging our perfectly balanced Blithering Idiot Barleywine in oak bourbon casks. This incredible combination creates a melange of flavors such as malt, dates, oak, vanilla, and bourbon just to name a few.

Bomber into shaker. Purchased at Discount Liquor in Milwaukee. Hazy orange brown with a yellow head that’s fuzzy and dissipates into a mottled surface of bubbles. Rich smell of golden raisin, vanilla, and syrup. Creamy and full in texture, sweet but not intensely so, mostly tastes of overripe fruit, butterscotch, and twigs. The bourbon barrel comes out with some more vanilla in the finish, which is smooth and maybe a bit mealy. It is kind of a mess, but I find it tasty nonetheless. The bourbon is restrained (I don’t find it "boozy" at all) and I’m a sucker for a full barleywine. Glad I bought it.

Bottle. Aroma of intense barley wine sweetness, some semi-rich maltiness, very light vanilla. Flavor follows suit and is just boring and overly sweet. A bit syrupy. Aside from the light vanilla, didn’t get any sign of the barrel-aging, nor any sign really of a complex barley wine. Drab.

DIdn’t really enjoy this one. Aroma very sweet, not terribly appealing though. Flavor even worse.

Bottle. Pours a clear amber/bornw with a small off-white head. Aroma of alcohol, sweet sweet malt, medicinal cough syrup. Flavor of sweet malt, raisins, and super booziness. Some oak flavors but really this is just a boozy, sweet, sticky mess. This is really nasty. More than a couple sips is too much for me... 3/3/4/2/5 (1.7/5)

Pours brown with thin head. Aroma is rich with cherry, fig, port, raisins and alcohol. Medium bodied and a bit sticky. Flavor is sweet with caramel and raisins, port, and cola. Alcohol is kinda hidden but it is a bit boozy. Not much hop profile in this one. Definitely one to sip. Seems like it’s overly sweet to make it taste old. Nevertheless, pretty good.

Appearance: A brownish mahogany with a dense, creamy 1/4 inch head. After sipping, webby lacing is left behind. Aroma: Green apple, booze, caramel, wood and very faint resinous hop. Taste: Chocolate, apple, wood, bourbon, vanilla, faint spicy hops that gives a brief bitter finish. Mouthfeel: Creamy. Overall: A great sipper, very complex, the great creamy mouthfeel really made it stand out from other Barley Wines/Old Ales.

Deep red pour with offwhite, whispy head. Aroma of vanilla, oak, whiskey, cherry. Flavor is nice: sweet, fruity malt with nice, subtle bourbon and oak. However, it kind of falls apart in the finish. A bit thin, the carbonation is a bit much for the style, Pretty nice, though isn’t perfect.

Very unique. Oak flavor very strong throughout, like a scotch or whiskey. Nice strength and body.
