Commercial Description:
Formerly Weyerbacher Belgian Triple.
At Weyerbacher we've recreated a Belgian Trippel without limitation. We use premium Pilsener malts, candi-sugar, and yeast strains- all imported from Belgium. To be true to the style, our Trippel is bottle conditioned. This means we add a bit of candi-sugar and yeast just prior to bottling. This imparts a special effervescence to the beer, a creamier carbonation, and also extends the shelf life. The on-going fermentation inside the bottle will change the character of the beer as it ages, and you'll find it becomes dryer with age. You may want to lay down a few bottles for future evaluation. We suggest storing at cellar temperatures -around 55 degrees F- and away from light.

Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow & blankboy -- courtesy of HogTownHarry. Golden yellow pour, small white head. Strong alcohol in aroma - pretty intense. What an in your face alcohol taste - strong alcohol but also citrus and an artificial candy character that was described around the table as Popeye Candy Cigarettes, which I can see. I don’t think I really like this, flavourful, but way too strong. Some sourness in the end as well (but maybe more sour apple than anything). Odd and vastly overrated, it amounts to a neat experimental failure.

Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, GregClow & tupalev -- courtesy of HogTownHarry. Pours a flat, lightly cloudy yellow with a spare white head. The aroma is predominently sour along with alcohol, spices, citrus and apples. The first thing I noticed in the flavour is the alcohol -- it’s really strong! Way too much so. Once I got past the alcohol harshness I tasted the sourness and apples again followed by a slightly unpleasant aftertaste. A dissapointment from Weyerbacher for me.

Bottle (12oz). Shared with blankboy, GregClow and tupalev - courtesy of myself. Poured a slightly reddish light gold with a smallish white head. Powerful sweet banana candy aroma to start with, then chalky alcohol, a sour malt component, but most of all exactly like Popeye brand candy cigarettes - blast from my childhood there! Taste is quite sour, sour apple, sour wine, sour cider - over all there is strong alcohol, with some white wine vinegar and a developing apricot tart fruitiness as it warmed. Mouthfeel is extremely alcoholic, also somewat acidic. This would be very interesting if the alcohol burn weren’t quite so overwhelming - the sourness was appealing.

I have not had this one in a while, and somehow I had remembered liking it, but based on this tasting I doubt that I would seek it out much again. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer pours a bright orange-golden color with a very small white head that fades quickly. The aroma is sour and tangy. The mouthfeel is fairly thick and the flavor is sour and very tangy with a dry finish. Not bad, but a bit disappointing.

Had this one at Zeno’s in State College, PA. From a bottle, it poured flat. Not even close to Belgian style. Watery, hint of Budweiser and rancidness. A complete let down.

Good aroma with most fruit; some light spice, and alcohol. Golden ale appearance, with only a minimum of sediment. Three flavors: light fruit, malt, and alcohol. This is not as fruity or complex as the better tripels, but still good. 6/6/4/15 ------ do I rerate, but I just had this again and it was so sweet, I couldn’t drink it, and neither could the Joebrew, who shared it with me. It did have a big banana aroma, but far too much sugar.

Slightly hazy, deep lemon body with a tight, velvety smooth white head. Strong phenolic smell of pepper and mustard and some sweet honey and toasted qualities. Flavor of honey, maple, toasted biscuits, herbs, phenols, orange peel, and ripe banana. Sweet and slightly sticky mouthfeel.

I had this on tap at had this at Belgium Comes to Cooperstown 2005 even though I’ve seen this in numerous cases and variety packs which I’ve been tempted to pick up. Its taste had a citrusy-malty tone to it and it seems to pride itself on its sweetness factor. It wasn’t a bad brew but to me its kind of like the last of the candy beers Wyebacher put out until it kicked major butt with its Quad, Prophecy and Herecy brews (Decadence?).
