Commercial Description:
Our latest creation, MUSE, is a Farmhouse Ale with a distinctive Weyerbacher signature. Farmhouse Ales, by tradition, were used as restoratives for workers during the warmer months under the hot midday sun. Typically made with barley, sometimes wheat and oats as well, a Farmhouse Ale could be light golden to amber in color, but always with a dry, slightly tart finish, thus being a great thirst quencher.
Weyerbacher MUSE is light amber in color, brewed with barley and a healthy dose of raw wheat and raw oats as per tradition, to give it a mouthfeel that’s both silky and light at the same time. The wheat and oats add a bit of cloudiness to the beer as well, so don’t be afraid, sometimes cloudy is good! A very special Belgian yeast strain was used to ferment this particular brew, and it was done at downright “hot” temperatures, 78 F, in order for the yeast to develop its spicy profile that is expected for a Farmhouse Ale. No spices were added to this brew, its all from the yeast.
MUSE is hopped with Styrian Goldings for bitter, and Saaz for aroma, both just adding even more to the dryness of the brew. Putting it all together, you have a slightly spicy palate, with pleasant aromas and very dry, mildly bitter finish. At 6.2%, you’ll want another one so you can ponder this intriguing taste profile, and you may find yourself wondering why you haven’t explored Farmhouse Ales before!

Pours out a hazy tangerine colour with a four finger head that fades to a solid cap, leaving good lacing. The nose is a horrible blend of stale/overripe grapfruit, barley, leather and dust. The flavour is even worse, tasting like rotting vegatables (mostly carrots and lettuce), apples and abbrasive spices. This is nearly a drainpour, but I can’t bring myself to waste beer. The finish is dry, leaving a gross lingering of its cloyinly sweet mid-palate profile. Ugh.

Murky orange color. Short lived white foamy head. Nose of brown sugar banana, bubble gum, coriander and orange rind. It is light in body. Some spicey notes, but lots of earthy yeast. Orange peel, thin honey, pepper, and herbal notes all jostle together in this beer. Innocuous saison.

22 oz bottle 11/11/07: Light amber w/ a lasting tight medium sized off white head. Laces well! First impression is peppery yeast. Then grainy malt, earthy/herbal hops along w/ the spicy yeast, also lighly soapy! Low esters. Flavor is peppery, spicy yeast up front, pils malt next! Light fruitiness and a bit sugary. Light bitterness in the finish & aftertaste. Herbal hop in the dry finish. Also a bit grainy. Light flavors overall w/ the exception of the yeast. Well hidden alcohol, but legs form on the glass, dry m/f, lighter medium body. Creamy @ first, but dries out when swallowed. Medium CO2. I’d like to see some more esters in this one, and it’s not a bad beer, just not very exciting.

Bomber. Hazy yellow pour with a small white head. Nose is faint and barely present. Taste comes off as perfumy and bitter with not the funkiness/horseblanket expected in this style. Very light body. Not a bad summer style beer but not near even the middle of the pack for saisons.

In short: A soft fruity basic Saison. Surprisingly true to the style and quite drinkable.
How: Mtl crew pre-Xmas 2007 tasting session.
The look: Cloudy golden body with a long-lasting small white head
In long: Nose of commercial sliced bread with a touch of bothersome vegetables. Taste is simple but pleasant. Fluffy mouthfeel with flavour of a crusty fruit pie with meringue. Some musty notes. A little sweeter than I’d like it to be but overall quite drinkable. I was shocked to drink such a smooth and quiet Saison by the usually over-the-top Weyerbacher. To me that was like coming across a tender ballad on a new Slayer album.

My Bottom Line:
Bready pale malts envelop the herbal, flowery hop flavors and their ensuing bitterness in this soft and slightly vegetal Saison.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A slice of foam tops the cloudy blond.
-The mouthfeel is rather authentic, which is not often the case in North American Belgian-style offerings.
-The carbonation is expansive, but a little breathing serves it well.
-That moderate vegetal scratch gets bothersome after a while.
-A touch of caramel is tasted within the hay and bread.

Bottle.

Cloudy light amber color. Plastic aroma, like the warm lights on a Christmas tree. Medium body, with a quite bad iron and vegetable taste to cover the little malt, I suspect a quite bad yeast is also the culprit. Quite bad.

Pours very cloudy, orange-amber colored, and with a medium white head. Aroma is faint, with notes of yeast and hops, but it is missing the musty root cellar aroma I expect in a saison. Flavor is soft malt with yeastiness and some hops. Overall, a little disappointing, but much better than the first bottle of this I had, which was infected with pediococcus. FInish is overly dry.
