Commercial Description:
Our latest creation, MUSE, is a Farmhouse Ale with a distinctive Weyerbacher signature. Farmhouse Ales, by tradition, were used as restoratives for workers during the warmer months under the hot midday sun. Typically made with barley, sometimes wheat and oats as well, a Farmhouse Ale could be light golden to amber in color, but always with a dry, slightly tart finish, thus being a great thirst quencher.
Weyerbacher MUSE is light amber in color, brewed with barley and a healthy dose of raw wheat and raw oats as per tradition, to give it a mouthfeel that’s both silky and light at the same time. The wheat and oats add a bit of cloudiness to the beer as well, so don’t be afraid, sometimes cloudy is good! A very special Belgian yeast strain was used to ferment this particular brew, and it was done at downright “hot” temperatures, 78 F, in order for the yeast to develop its spicy profile that is expected for a Farmhouse Ale. No spices were added to this brew, its all from the yeast.
MUSE is hopped with Styrian Goldings for bitter, and Saaz for aroma, both just adding even more to the dryness of the brew. Putting it all together, you have a slightly spicy palate, with pleasant aromas and very dry, mildly bitter finish. At 6.2%, you’ll want another one so you can ponder this intriguing taste profile, and you may find yourself wondering why you haven’t explored Farmhouse Ales before!

Bottle sampled on 6/30/07: Pours a hazy copper orange with a wispy-lacing froth of white head. Aroma of toasty, bready caramel malts with a touch of earthy peppery hops and some medicinal phenols. Body starts slightly caramely, bready and dry with some earthy, grassy peppery and fizzy carbonation toward a dry warming finish with a lot of off-flavors.

22 oz bottle pours a cloudy orange body with a small offwhite head that quickly falls into a ring of flecky lace. Aroma of caramel, coriander, pepper, and vague melon. Taste is floral hops, caramel, and white pepper. Malts become a bit syrupy with caramel. Not at all saison like. Weyerbacher misses the mark with this one.

Terrible smell dominated by rubber, raisins, and DMS. Cloudy golden with floating sediments and a thick head. Rubbery taste. I’ll just stop there. I can’t stomach anymore of this crap. It is either tainted or the worst....beer....ever.

Soft honey-copper appearance with plentiful large bubbles and a large, foamy, off-white head that settles out showing moderate retention, moderate lacing. High clarity, presumably sterile filtered.
Some dusty hops are laid atop both mushy-sweet pale malts and some crusty, bready caramel malts. Spicy banana and clove just don’t work when overwhelmed in residual sugars. Sugared peaches and apricots are notable, as well as light alcohol warmth on the end. Medium strength of aroma.
Pesky carbonation fails to dispel the overly sweet, nearly-syrupy caramel malts up front, while the finish is stranegly bitter and scratchy on the palate. Some mildly tart fruit esters are about the extent of the saison qualities here. While it’s not overdone with actual spices (none), it’s either using some really weird yeast or (most likely) not fermented correctly. I’m thinking the latter, as the lack of attenuation is glaringly obvious and 78 degrees is too cool to ferment a good saison. Sweet and muddled. Messy as usual, from this brewer.

Orangish color with a fluffy head that leaves plenty of lacing. Warm, sugary, spiced aroma with hints of fruit. Flavor is bitter up front with some sweet fruitiness similar to grapefruit. Not a whole lot going on. Thick in the mouth. I haven’t had many saisons but this was only ok to me.

Cloudy, amber/orange appearance with a medium size off white head and a fair amount of lacing. Yeasty, mildly spiced, woodsy aroma. Taste is sweeter than the nose might indicate, with an herbal, spicy edge. Creamy, medium bodied, well carbonated mouthfeel; dry, slightly bitter on the palate. Tart, lingering finish.

Came across a handful of these bombers discounted for $0.99, grabbed a couple for good measure. While this is not a Saison that really impressed me, I am pleased at the beer overall. Quirky aroma of spicy funk and old fruit. I didn’t care for the aroma at first, but it gets more intriguing as time passes by. Wonderful bright and cloudy orange-amber pour. Large pillowing white head and a thick coat of fluffy lacing. Light on the palate with a real nice and easy smoothness. Melts away as it is constantly sipped. Finishes a touch syrupy with a bitter yeastiness. Biting flavor of fermented citrus and spicy yeast. A nice touch of lightly sour, funky malt. Noticeable wheat presence to compliment the barley. Unusual, even for this style and I like it. As odd as this beer seems, it all works out.

22oz. Pours dark hazy orange with a big foamy white head. Some decent banana aroma, maybe a bit of menthol. Nothing intriguing about this taste profile as the commercial description touts. All I get is alcohol in this one, with maybe the slightest touch of spice and fruit. I have no doubt a saison is one of the harder brews for american micros, and I feel like weyerbacher struck out on this one. That said, my bottle could have been old as the establishment who sold it to me is less than reputable when it comes to beer age. Everything said, saison is one of my favorite styles and this is no Saison Dupont.
