Commercial Description:
Our latest creation, MUSE, is a Farmhouse Ale with a distinctive Weyerbacher signature. Farmhouse Ales, by tradition, were used as restoratives for workers during the warmer months under the hot midday sun. Typically made with barley, sometimes wheat and oats as well, a Farmhouse Ale could be light golden to amber in color, but always with a dry, slightly tart finish, thus being a great thirst quencher.
Weyerbacher MUSE is light amber in color, brewed with barley and a healthy dose of raw wheat and raw oats as per tradition, to give it a mouthfeel that’s both silky and light at the same time. The wheat and oats add a bit of cloudiness to the beer as well, so don’t be afraid, sometimes cloudy is good! A very special Belgian yeast strain was used to ferment this particular brew, and it was done at downright “hot” temperatures, 78 F, in order for the yeast to develop its spicy profile that is expected for a Farmhouse Ale. No spices were added to this brew, its all from the yeast.
MUSE is hopped with Styrian Goldings for bitter, and Saaz for aroma, both just adding even more to the dryness of the brew. Putting it all together, you have a slightly spicy palate, with pleasant aromas and very dry, mildly bitter finish. At 6.2%, you’ll want another one so you can ponder this intriguing taste profile, and you may find yourself wondering why you haven’t explored Farmhouse Ales before!

Sampled at the RBSG 07 Grand Tasting. Hazy yellow color. Faint spice and wheat nose with similar body. Bit of a disappointment after some of Weyerbacher’s other beers.

Tap at Collins Bar. Very cloudy, muddy coloured beer wtih a white head. Interesting aroma, very earthy and musty with an underlying character of dried fruit and fresh tobacco. Wet leaves and damp husky maltiness over a soft wheaty spice and a heavy earthy yeast element. As the temperature rises the yeast starts to show more spiciness. There is a touch of noble hop aroma/flavour but just a touch. As the beer warms more, the components really start to come together with a soft spiciness and lots of dried fruit (apricot, pear) set against a bready maltiness. It’s interesting and not really a great example of a saison, but for me it works.

Cloudy orange color with a big white head. Overwhelming funkiness which I like. Full bodied. Slightly sweet. Aromas of wild yeast and orange juice. Flavors of slight citrus, lemon and a slightly bitter finish. The finish is rather quick I was expecting a little more there. I’m into this style this time of year.

Aroma reminds me of a wit. Hazy brown body wiht a medium palate. The taste is average malt, plenty of yeast and spice, but nothing very good at all.

Bomber. As usual a subpar offering from Weyerbacher. Cloudy gold with a white head. Confused nose - some grain, corn, lemon and light spice. Nothing in particular. Flavor is um, not right. Grainy and lemony, some chalk and orange followed by crappy pineapple. Ugh. Once again, this brewery fails. Apparently, you have to age anything they make in a barrel to make it pallet able.

Bottle. Pours golden amber color with a smallish off white head. Aroma is somewhat floral, maybe some peach, pale malts. Flavor is orange, coriander, peach, pale malts, wheat, and something "off". Palate is medium bodied, medioum carbonation, finishes bitter. Has some sharpness and some yeastiness. Another not so very good brew from these guys. There is nothing subtle about this, it just like boom in your face, and not in a good way. Strike at least 6 for Weyerbracher. When I get wordy, it’s either a good or really bad thing, in this case bad.
