Commercial Description:
Our latest creation, MUSE, is a Farmhouse Ale with a distinctive Weyerbacher signature. Farmhouse Ales, by tradition, were used as restoratives for workers during the warmer months under the hot midday sun. Typically made with barley, sometimes wheat and oats as well, a Farmhouse Ale could be light golden to amber in color, but always with a dry, slightly tart finish, thus being a great thirst quencher.
Weyerbacher MUSE is light amber in color, brewed with barley and a healthy dose of raw wheat and raw oats as per tradition, to give it a mouthfeel that’s both silky and light at the same time. The wheat and oats add a bit of cloudiness to the beer as well, so don’t be afraid, sometimes cloudy is good! A very special Belgian yeast strain was used to ferment this particular brew, and it was done at downright “hot” temperatures, 78 F, in order for the yeast to develop its spicy profile that is expected for a Farmhouse Ale. No spices were added to this brew, its all from the yeast.
MUSE is hopped with Styrian Goldings for bitter, and Saaz for aroma, both just adding even more to the dryness of the brew. Putting it all together, you have a slightly spicy palate, with pleasant aromas and very dry, mildly bitter finish. At 6.2%, you’ll want another one so you can ponder this intriguing taste profile, and you may find yourself wondering why you haven’t explored Farmhouse Ales before!

A hazy amber ale with a thick off white head. A pleasant rising bread aroma, yeast, light vanilla and cream, herbal notes. In mouth, light farmhouse ale with gin alcohol, grainy notes. Tasted April 25 2009.

Dont recommend. Pours amber with no head. Smells of funky feet and rotten apples. Tastes of rotten spicy apple cider. No carbonation. Steer clear.

Pale orange yellow color around the sides which fades to a deep brown in the middle. Light tan head on top. Not very much on the nose. Some sweet fruity funk. Touch of vinegar and grass. Bitter flavor with notes of apple. Hoppy finish. Not great. Very lifeless and watery.

Bomber. Honestly, I’m not sure what happened here. This beer tastes like Weyerbacher felt they should make a “saison” to keep up with the craft beer pulse, but didn’t really know how to brew one. Gone is the subtle farmhouse, delicate herbal qualities, and refreshing funkiness. In its place is a buttery-sweet fruitiness, bordering on overripe pear and creamsicle. No balancing or interesting characters to salvage this.

Bottle Pours a hazy gold with a diminishing white head. Produces minimal lacing. Has a nice sweet aroma of flowers and malts. Has a real good carbination and a good mouthfeel. Has good flavor. Has an almost belgian taste. Nice sweetness. Has a light body and a watery texture. A solid finish. This reminds me of Merry Monks. It is real good.

Bomber poured a cloudy orange with a lasting off white head. Aromas of straw, light carmel, floral, citrus and light spice. Palate was light bodied and crisp with a dry finish. Flavors of straw, spice, light carmellight earthiness and a hint of fruittiness with a crisp dry earthy finish.

Orlando, Fl. - Knightly Spirits - 22 oz bomber. Pours a delightful murky deep orange with a soft, pillowy, sticky white head. Delicate yeasty aroma with just a hint of lemon. Flavor is thirst quenching and delicious. Pick up some peaches, butter, lemon, yeasty back end, hints of cookie dough. Thick, smooth mouthfeel, Quickly becoming one of my favorite styles - and a definite winner from one of my new favorite brewers.

Feb. 25, 2009; 22 oz. "bomber"; chalice; $6 USD @ Kraig’s Keg’s, Sherill, NY USA. Attractive cloudy amber color, with an even, tiny-bubbled head and lacing . Aroma is musty & fruity. Flavor screams "Belgian"; citrus-fruity as well, with a "love-it-or-hate-it" bitter & astringent character another rater accurately likened to quinine. Body is hearty. While this flawed brew falls into the "strong" ale category, it would be interesting to sample an historically-correct (i.e., lower alcohol) saison for comparison’s sake. After all, a five-liter daily allotment of this would’ve incapacitated the harvest workers whom it was intended to refresh.
