Commercial Description:
Massively big and delicious, QUAD is an elegant and dark ale. Rich with complexity and flavor, try savoring it after a long day or during a fine dinner. You also might enjoy it as an aperitif or as an accompaniment to a dessert, but QUAD stands alone quite well. We recommend enjoying QUAD in a brandy snifter or wineglass so you can drink in the aroma of this fine elixir.

12oz. bottle, got this a ways back from rich. This poured very syrup like. Smell was hard to pick out, just a mash of everything. I got lots of malt and sour and a trace of hops, but over all it was not that tasty, to me.

I wasn’t that impressed. There are some interesting flavors, but the overall taste isn’t very pleasant. Try it anyway.

12 oz bottle. Dark purple/garnet beer with a thin tan head. Aroma is of rum raisins, dried apricot, spicy, peppery alcoholic aroma, woody, yeasty dustiness, sweet brown sugar. Flavour is fairly sweet, yeasty and spicy, brown sugar, black pepper. Can taste the hops and there is a quite a shot of alcohol in here. A little bit vineous. There’s a lot of good stuff in here, but it’s not really cohesive at all. Not sure what it needs. A better yeast strain, with some more assertive spice, and less dustiness. Lower hopping might be a good idea as well.

From a 12 oz bottle poured into a snifter. Attractive beer is very dark brown with a thick off-white head. As you drink the beer the bubbles continue to cling to the glass, which I like. Aroma is of brown sugar, and maybe raisins. The alcohol is prevalent in the nose. The flavor starts out with a very sweet sugary taste complimented by some spice and maybe hickory. The alcohol burn finishes this beer with every sip and sort of turns me off to it. I find that the actual Belgian made versions of this style hide the alcohol much more. Perhaps this beer will improve with age. Still not a bad beer.

I had this back to back with the St Bernardus 12, and its interesting to compare. They’re both rather ugly in the glass - murky, "dirty water" looking in the glass. Aroma is Fruity - cherries, maybe - and smoky, woodsy component. Maybe some mushroom, as well. Sweet and tart at first, with an herbal finish. Small notes of tobacco, walnuts, prune, and a persistant alcohol burn. Whereas the St Bernardus seemed more than the sum of its parts, this one seems somehow a bit less. Still a very enjoyable brew, though. Thanks to Springslicker for this one!

This is the closest thing I’ve had to a LaTrappe Quad (my favorite abbey quad). This is a little more bitter than LaTrappe, otherwise very, very good.

Bottle. Opaque rust-tinted brown body, not much head. Very estery aroma: unripe green grapes, the sweet part of rhubarb, dry roasted malt, and some candi sugar. Big sweet flavor with some peppermint spice in the finish. I get grahm gracker, sweet malt, brown sugar in the start with the finish trending towards spicy peppermint, those cinnamon hot candies, some herbal green hops, oak, and light (but fitting alcohol). The flavors are vey well blended and compliement one another well. Also, there’s a distinct change in flavor from start to finish making for an interesting savory experience. I usualy dislike Quads because they’re too sweet but the spice in this one does a great job of balancing out the rich malt. The carbonation seems a overdone but the bubles are quite small so they don’t blast out your mouth.

This poured out an opaque brown color with a slightly red hue. A tall head of beige foam formed a top the body and rose from the glass. As the head drops down to a bubbly cap sticky rings of lace are left to decorate the glass. Smells of sweet dark ripe fruit rose from the glass with a bit of spicy caramel covered malt mixing in as. A slight smell of alcohol creeps in as this warms but it only adds to the experience. Fruit hits the palette first with a light spicy sweetness that is met with a caramel flavor. There was a good bit of spice in this as well that also was present in the bitter lingering after taste. Very complex flavor with only the slightest hint of the huge alcohol on the aftertaste. The body felt a little thinner than most quads but was creamy and pleasing. Drinkability is good with no negative alcohol presence and a very complex flavor. I will be picking up a few more of these next time I see them and recommend you try this if you haven’t.
