sfontain (496), Columbus, Ohio, USA Jan 30, 2007 Single 12 oz. bottle from Wine Vault, Columbus, OH; served from a small snifter. Gorgeous red color, but, sadly, virtually no head. Aroma is cherries, berries, spices (only immediately after swirling), gummi bears, candy sugar, and light warmth from the alcohol; the more I sniff this, the more enticing the aroma becomes. Flavor is the tiniest bit sour, with lots of malt and fruity sweetness; some kind of indescribable malty breadiness/Kool-Aid appears in the middle which, which is somehow fitting; lightly tingly all the way through with some alcohol in the exhale; lightly warming; very dry finish. Medium body; low carbonation. I really think this one is underrated, but I’m having a hard time deciding just how "good" this beer is. Is it just above average, or is it outstanding? If you just pop the cap, pour it into a glass, and start drinking, it’s forgettable and average at best. On the other hand, I’m stricken by how good this beer is if you really go hunting for aromas and flavors; you find a lot of complex stuff going on if you really take the time to analyze and enjoy it, but you really do need to look for the greatness here. Ultimately, having rated over 450 beers at this point, I feel comfortable saying this is in the top 10% of beers I’ve had to date, but I’d have a hard time putting it in the top 2%. Overall, this is a great beer to analyze, and I’m glad to have tried it.
thornecb (975), Marblehead, Massachusetts, USA Jul 18, 2008 Pours orange-amber into a trappist glass. White head quickly recedes to skim surface leaving no lacing. Pit fruit and bubblegum aromas. Sticky sweet upfront with a pit fruit middle and lasting alcohol burn. The_Epeeist (891), Swarthmore, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 17, 2008 Updated: Jul 18, 200812 oz bottle, cellared over a year. Almost clear orange brown with some beige, bubbly edging. Nose is banana, raisin and booze. A bit syrupy with a faint tingle. Taste is toffee and apple brandy with a dry yeasty finish. Sweet and simple but easy to drink with well hidden alcohol. Could age many years. Funknmilla (489), Absecon, New Jersey, USA Jul 16, 2008 12 oz bottle...reddish copper--beige head...you can smell the alcohol in the first whiff...also banana...malty banana...and a raisin/prune undertone....silky body with drippy lacing.....flavor---strong alcohol in the first burst...then some banana.....alcohol infused and candy tainted na na ...i even burb up some banana (which im a sucker for)-----Excellent pairing------homemade banana bread...it absorbs the alcohol and brings out the flavors in the brew....a stickiness left to the lips......very tasty and alcohol very well disguised daniellerose7 (119), new york, New York, USA Jul 14, 2008 I was not too excited about this beer- as a big Belgian/Belgian style fan, I don’t think that this compares to other quadrupels. The alcohol taste is a little too prevalent and there isn’t quite enough other flavor to back it up. But, the more I drink, the better it is. dunkpigen (253), Kolding, Denmark Jul 14, 2008 Bottle. Pours orange with an offwhite head. Aroma is fruity, yeasty and vinious. Flavour is very vinious, sweet and fruity.
