Commercial Description:
Whale Gulch Brewery is located at the edge of the Sinkyone Wilderness on Northern California’s Lost Coast. Water straight from an untreated mountain spring with a mineral balance ideal for brewing is combined with solar power, grain, hops, and yeast to produce this delicious oatmeal stout. GOOD KARMA, GREAT TASTE!

This dark brown ale poured with a massive brown head that started flowing as soon as I uncapped the bottle. I had to wait for a few minutes of subsiding before I could actually reach the liquid. It wasn’t worth the wait. There is a sour soapy taste that ruins an otherwise decent chocolate malt base.

Bomber from rkuhnel. Black color with a four finger dark tan head. Smells like smooth dark roasted/toasted malts. Got coffee and chocolate. Medium body with really frothy carbonation. Flavor is more like a porter than a stout. Still it has dark toasted malt, coffee and chocolate. Smacks my mouth. Finish carries a slight hint of sour. Could be me. Could be the brewer. It is not Stone 12, but it is a decent stout. A bit dry for a sweet stout, perhaps, but still decent.

This will be my 500th rating. Purchased from the North Coast Coop here in Eureka for $4.35 it poured a very deep garnet that was for all intents and purposes black. A huge brown head rose from the glass and stayed there long enough for the brew to warm up some. When it had settled, leaving little lacing I dug in. Rich nose of roasted malts with coffee, chocolate, and caramel dominating. Smooth mouthfeel and rich flavors. Good finish. For a small brewery hidden away in the King Range of California these folks did quite well with this one. One of the better Oatmeal stouts I have partaken of. Yum.
