ClarkVV (3547), Allston, Massachusetts, USA Nov 3, 2005 On tap at the brewery, 10/28/2005 with SuIIy. Served extremely cold, as usual for here, but letting it warm up allows for a fantastic amount of flavor, so by all means let it warm. The beer is a highly unfiltered, rich brown-burgundy with a small but dense and fairly well-retained beige head leaving behind some spotty lacing. It has a pretty high protein density and is unfiltered so it should, by all means, lace well. I think the higher than usual carbonation is what prevents this from forming. The aroma smells of rich nuts and chocolate fudge, with a smooth almost vanilla-cream note and then an expressive house yeast which I swear is Belgian. Ripe cherries, figs and dates round it out. The flavor is full of chocolate fudge and has a chewy, substantial texture after it warms and the carbonation backs off. Profound nuttiness encounters more cherries and dates while the "Belgian" yeast works its magic. This yeast is just amazing, I could sit and drink this beer all day. Throw this in a snifter, and serve it only slightly chilled and I bet it would pass for a belgian brown ale. Well malted without being too sweet and a very low hops profile. Love the yeast! SuIIy (1109), W Newton, Massachusetts, USA Nov 2, 2005 On tap at the Whale Tail! Pours a deep brown, fizzy color with a fizzy white head. Very cold, nose is slight malt and nuts when it begins to warm. Taste is nice dark fruit and nuts, with some solid malt characteristics. Vac (2253), San Diego, California, USA Jan 6, 2003 Deep Brown color with amber undertones. Almost to sweet caramel malt aroma with a slight fruitiness. Slightly sweet, hoppy flavor with a yeasty malt background. Not a good brown ale at all.
