NomDeBeer (154), Baltimore, Maryland, USA Aug 15, 2008 Had this almost a year ago, so I’m going from handwritten notes. Dark brown color, bubbly head. A bit overcarbonated for the style which makes the body seem lighter than it really is. Aurelius is exactly right - nutty cola flavors. Little hop presence. Pretty good. Holdwine (831), Beertimore, Maryland, USA Oct 30, 2007 A sweet porter. Great coffe/toffee malting to go with molasses notes. Very un British hop presence actually fits well. Aurelius (2507), Tallahassee, Florida, USA Dec 9, 2006 Medium dark, ruby brown - rootbeer colored. Filmy tan head. Light, slightly sfruity coffee aroma. Sweetish, nutty cola flavors over cocoa. Unpleasant watery old-coffee finish. Medium to medium light body. More of a brown than a porter. hopscotch (4579), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Oct 20, 2003 Pours menacingly black. Only when help up to the Sun did I get a view of this beer's true, sparkling clear, ruby hue. The large, frothy, light-brown head is not quite fully lasting, but diminishes into a small, 1/2 finger-width, creamy head with staying power.
The aroma is a blend of licorice, cinnamon, pepper and allspice. Kind of weird... appealingly weird.
Nice, spicy flavor. Bitter cocoa and espresso. Sassafras/root beer and buttermilk notes. Very astringent and well-hopped.
Medium-bodied with a dry, astringent mouthfeel and lively carbonation. Short, very dry, bitter finish.
