May 19, 2005 I would go so far as to call this the best Mead in the entire world! And I drink a lot of mead. We buy it by the case so we don’t run out. Very nice berry flavor but not overwhelming. Slightly dry but not so dry as to make you pucker. Black Mead is jsut a great beverage to sit down and drink a whole bottle of at a time.

Mar 20, 2005 A nice reddish color. A nice dry mead with a hint of fruitiness. Very drinkable with little alchohol taste.

Aug 14, 2009 Musty with black currants on the nose. Pours amber with a purple tint. Tart cranberries, sour grapes, and black currant, bitter cranberry, very smooth. Awesome mead.

Sep 29, 2008 ABR 2008. Nice nose of berries and honey. Flavor is sweet, finishes with some dryness.

Jan 17, 2009 Corked bottle. Pours a thick and oily dark ruby with an aroma of subtle berry-infused red wine and a touch of oak. The liquid leaves a nice translucent film on the glass as it sloshes about inside the goblet. Flavor is a rush of red wine that tapers into a subtle berry and honey blend that leaves a pleasing bitterness on the tongue. Full and coating mouthfeel that keeps the flavors bouncing on the taste buds. A fine mead that straddles the line of a red wine. Nice stuff.

Dec 6, 2004 Sampled at the winery. Pours a dark red color. Dark berry aroma. The flavor certainly reminded me of a large-bodied red wine like a Pinot Noir. Deep cherry and currant flavors. The sweetness from the honey is barely detectable.

Oct 8, 2006 ABR 2006. Unusual. Light red color. I wasn’t aware of the black currants before drinking. Aroma has some honey and fruit. Flavor is sweet and sour, and the sour is by far the most sour mead I have ever tasted. Dry, but not as dry as their dry mead. I really like this.

May 21, 2007 During May ’07 brewpub tour, stopped at the winery in Iron River, WI. Black Mead is a dry honey wine with a burnt redish/merlot color. Aroma of earthy berries, almost Kiwi shoe polish. States is not as fruity as Black Harbor but nice tart currant and sweet light honey. Finish is dry and smooth.
