White Winter Blueberry Mead

Light cranberry juice color. Thin and still looking. Blueberry pancakes and vanilla aromas. Initial dry honey taken away by a sugered blueberry flavor. Middle has a near floral hops quality. Finish is fairly dry and a touch acidic. If you like sweet blueberries I do believe you would enjoy this one. I am definetly going to put some of this in with my next batch of blueberry crepes.

Sample at the meadery, late July 2006, from a White Winter glass. Deep reddish-pink with thick legs leaving lots of crystallized sugars in the glass....very sweet fruity nose with just a light touch of acidity, lovely wafts of vanilla and, interestingly, a sort of biscuity malt touch.....front is very sweet and lightly syrupy, turning gradually acidic and quite dry, even shading to a light bitterness/metallic character at the finish. Well-made as are all of the White Winter products but not amongst my favorites.

During May ’07 brewpub tour, stopped at the winery in Iron River, WI. Pours a deep ruby-pink color wine with pink highlights at edge of glass. Aroma has blueberries and just a touch of sweet light honey. Very fruity. Flavor is mostly blueberries with a hint of honey as a sweet aftertaste kicks in. Palate is semi-sweet and a little syrupy. A nice compliment to a breakfast pancakes and blueberry syrup.

Sampled at the winery. Pours a dark red color. Slightly fruity aroma. If you really focus on the taste and imagine blueberries, you can taste them. Otherwise, this is just a slightly sweet liquid with a little honey flavor. I’m okay with subtle, but not if it’s on the only flavor the beer/mead is supposed to showcase.

One of the highlights of the 2005 ABR. There is a huge and pleasant blueberry aroma. The mead is pink. This is very sweet with no flavor of honey at all; light blueberry and some sugar. Great for sipping. Dry finish. This is not as sweet as some meads.

At White Winter Winery. Dark Red/Blue Tinted Coloring. Blueberry Aroma..But Very Slight. On the Tongue...Sweetness From the Honey and VERY subtle Blueberry Notes. Smooth and Enjoyable But Would Be Better if the Blueberries Were Brought Out More.

Courtesy TheCheeseMan. The still, clear body pours the color of rose wine. Thin legging drips down the side of the glass. Aromas are obviously blueberry-centric, with fresh floral honey notes backing up the fleshy fruit. There is a wisp of alcohol detectable on the nose. Flavors are semi-sweet for a mead, to the point of being almost vinous, with fresh blueberry and light honey notes working well together. As the appearance foreshadows, the body is a bit on the light side. This is one of the drier meads that I’ve experienced. Interesting stuff.

Sampled at the White Winter Winery. Pale red color with a subtle blueberry nose. Very nice, smooth blueberry body with a faint honey character.
