This pours a clear deep ruby, amber color and is topped by a thin tan head. It is pretty well carbonated as well. The aroma is an interesting mix of caramel malt and dry honey notes. I get hints of citrus fruits, floral mead notes, a bit of wine-like alcohol notes and some aged malt notes that remind me a bit of sherry. Over all the aroma is pretty muted though. The taste is lightly sweet up front, and it is quite spritzy from the carbonation. This does have interesting notes of both mead and beer. The finish has that sort herbal, wine like note that is from the finish of a nice dry mead as well as a hint of bitter hoppiness.
This is actually pretty tasty and has not oxidized/ aged nearly as much as I had expected, and I really do like the balance between the malt (caramel and biscuit) and the honey notes. YourDarkLord (1800), Urbana, Illinois, USA

| 3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 4/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 12/20 | Mar 13, 2005 Sampled at Peoria Int’l Beer Festival. Slightly hazy amber with a big, frothy white head. Sour grain nose - I wouldn’t have expected this to be a mead by the aroma alone. Flavor - HERE is the mead - is rather cider-like, with earthy Red Delicious apple peels, sugar, and honey. Moderately carbonated, with a acidic finish. Interesting, but not something I would have again. robertsreality (2460), Minnesota, USA

| 3.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 1/5 | 13/20 | Dec 6, 2004 Sampled at White Winter Winery. Pours a dark brown color. Strange aroma of wood. Holy crap... the taste is outrages. This tastes overwhelmingly like heavily charred oak barrels and ash. It was too much and steamrolled any other flavor I could discern. Yikes. Light grassy aroma with some white sugar notes. White sugar, honey, wheat malt in the flavor. Grassy hops. Light and refreshing, but also semi-interesting. | 2.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 1/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Apr 28, 2003 Not much to look at: quickly disapating head and murky body. Kicks like a damned mule--big fresh malt flavor with an intensely long desert-dry finish. A bit harsh actually. Tough to rate, and kind of tough to drink.
