33cl bottle. A pitch black stout with a foamy, medium-sized beige head that dissipates reasonably quickly leaving a thin layer of carbonation. Aromas of roasted malts, plenty of sweet milk chocolate and a certain degree of perfume. The flavours are based around dark chocolates, coffee and a thick toffee maltiness. The finish produces a dry, lasting smokiness as well as some chocolate and more subtle perfuminess in the aftertaste. A dry body with a thickish, soft mouthfeel.

Cask, Newark Fest 08. Black with a beige head. Aromas are dry and earthy with coffee. Flavours are sweet, earthy coffee with some chocolate. OK.

Cask handpull at The King & Queen, East Malling. Good fullness, richness in the mouth, hinting at the richness of oysters. Sharpness on finish. bit too much burnt malt maybe, but actually a very good half. Maybe even a bit too rich for me. Tasty and well put together. Some blackberry fruit.

Rate from May ’07.
Bottle from Uto. Dark brown with a thin tan head. Light roasted malts, cocoa and some coffee in the aroma and taste. The roasted malts are nice, but it’s lacking in taste elsewhere. Not very good.

On cask at Market Porter, London. Very plain flavour, then kicks into high-gear with full on oyster taste. Tart. Ends smooth and creamy, reminiscent of vanilla ice cream. Quite enjoyable.

330ml bottle from Waitrose, Hythe. Black with a milk chocolate head; intense aroma of bitter chocolate and coffee; thick and oily and intesely bitter chocolate flavour; dry finish with some underlying sweetness. Very drinkable.

Another good drop from the Whitstable Brewery. I thought this had that chocolate-coffeeness that makes a good stout and had a nice bitter taste too. Very smooth and palatable.

June 2007Filtered 330ml bottle Well, to put it simply, this is ordinary stuff. This is not the bottle conditioned Swale brewery glory. This is a stout sure enough - nice flavours, sure enough. But that edge, that freshness, that glory, is missing. The flavours are muted, thin, metallic. Some watery chocolate. Some indifferent roast. Artificial carbonation buzzing away. Blah! Not the same beer at all.
