Commercial Description:
Brewed for Whole Foods. Old Plowshare is a full-flavored Celtic style Stout. Smooth and firm-bodied with the bold flavor notes of dark roasted malts. Because Old Plowshare is organic it remains true to the time-honored Irish tradition of respect for natural ingredients. A great pub classic or the perfect Black and Tan.

Sitting outside in 90 degree weather may not be the best environment for rating a stout of any sort, but this one came through with flying colors. Dark bronze, with a thin beige head. Aroma suggests a sweet stout more than a dry one - kinda of a mocha latte thing going on. Really nice flavor is more coffee, roasty forward with sweeter notes in the background. I was surprised how much I enjoyed this one.

Dark beer that shines with mahogany colors when held against the light. Big, rocky beige head. Lots of dusty chocolate in the nose, with plenty of fresh cereal grains and malted milk balls. Flavors of coffee, dusty chocolate, malted milk balls, and an almost berry fruitiness under it all. Interesting flavors, but not my favorite stout.

Bottle. Pours a very dark brown with an average size lasting frothy tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, chocolate and light green hops. Flavour of roasted malt and coffee followed by light hops and some lactic notes. Medium bodied, creamy mouthfeel. A simple but well made Stout -- good stuff.

Poured from 12 oz bottle a black color with thin gray-tan head. Aroma is mostly roast with coffee. Flavor is tart bitter roasty with a small dab of sweetness and a slight nuttiness and smoke. The palate is round with soft edges and an almost milky texture. The beer was good and flavors were ok, but perhaps could have been a bit edgier. It would make a nice mixing beer for a black and tan but alone there are better stouts.

Pours a not entirely opaque, almost cloudy brown with lots of lace. Bright notes of fresh coffee in the nose, some sea water and candied licorice. Mildly bitter roasted flavours and some nuttiness. Clean, dry, refreshing, bit sweet, tiny bit of acidity in the finish. If I could pick this up at my local supermarket it’d be a treat. Nicely done.

Bottle. Pours a nice stout black, head was thin with big bubbles, not much lacing. Nose was weak, with roast and coffees but not a lot going on. Taste was a bit watery. Very clean, malt and roast and coffee come through but it’s all a bit watery. finishes clean.

Bottle. Black body, a bit of brown light shines through at the edge. The head is a pretty medium tan. Nose is roasty malt, a bit of cocoa, some nuttiness & dark fruits. Flavor is burnt malt, sweet dark caramel, apples (not a bad thing), some chocolaty hops. Very nice creamy body with a lower carbonation level. As it warms a kind of smoky mint comes through in the nose.
