Commercial Description:
Brewed for Whole Foods. Old Plowshare is a full-flavored Celtic style Stout. Smooth and firm-bodied with the bold flavor notes of dark roasted malts. Because Old Plowshare is organic it remains true to the time-honored Irish tradition of respect for natural ingredients. A great pub classic or the perfect Black and Tan.

Bottle from Total Wine. Pours a murky brown with a little head. Aroma is malty with a bit of roasted chocolate and a touch of coffee. Taste is a tad bitter with a dry finish to it. Not too impressed by this one.

Appearance: Not a very picturesque Irish Dry Stout. Pours black/brown with a twinge of ruby. Initially, a vigorous head, but it eventually bids farewell leaving being only a skimpy membrane of tan bubbles. Certified Organic? Well, that’s a relief! Smell: The aroma is full of dry chocolate malt and sweetened coffee. Taste: Tastes, however sparingly, of bittersweet chocolate marked by flavors of cold coffee and mild bitterness. Obligatory dry finish. Mouthfeel/Drinkability: A bit thin and light-bodied, but extremely drinkable and well-balanced. I could easily tackle the rest of the 4-pack if I was so inclined.

12oz Bottle Pours out a very dark brown topped with a tan head. A nice aroma of roast malt and sweetness. Pretty good, but not as thick as I was looking for.

Pours dark brown almost black with a thin beige head. The aroma was very pleasant , with hints of: malt, vanilla, maple and brown sugar. The flavor had notes of: malt, chocolate, oak, coffee, and smoke. Very well balanced with a smooth finish.

Dark brown with burgundy colors around the sides of the glass, with a tall, large-bubbled light brown head. Soft, creamy milk, cream and smoked toasted chocolate malts, lightly dry and with a bit of a coffee creamer flavor. A little thin up front, more creamy in the middle, with an unmistakable flavor of cookies and cream ice cream. The vanilla note is very evident, in the finish especially. Very good stout.

$7.49 for a four pack at Broudy’s. I usually avoid anything labeled “low fat” or “organic”, but a beer from North Coast that I haven’t tried was too enticing to pass up. As expected, North Coast delivered a tasty brew. Aroma was dark roasted malt and molasses. Flavors of coffee, molasses, roasty dark malts, and hop bitterness come through. Very good all around. Bold stout flavors, with a slight sourness like you find in a good Irish stout. Very roasty and pronounced coffee character with an earthy hop presence. Finishes dry. Nice!
