Commercial Description:
Brewed for Whole Foods. Old Plowshare is a full-flavored Celtic style Stout. Smooth and firm-bodied with the bold flavor notes of dark roasted malts. Because Old Plowshare is organic it remains true to the time-honored Irish tradition of respect for natural ingredients. A great pub classic or the perfect Black and Tan.

12oz bottle acquired in trade with JimboWood (thanks!). Poured a dark brown color with an averaged sized off white head. Aromas of chocolate, roast, toasted malts, and a light grassiness. Tastes of chocolate, roast, and light coffee. Thinner body.

Frothy, big bubbled head - plenty of carbonation here. Cocoa and slight hints of coffee in the flavo nad roasty maltsr, but the flavor is also somewhat too watery. The finish is bitter and seems "off", metallic even. I was happy about the idea of the "organic" thing since I love Brooklyn’s organic porter so much, but this was pretty disappointing. I wish that I had known it was made for Whole Foods before I bought it, and I probably wouldn’t have. Oh well.

Bottle and served in my La Chouffe tulip: Pours a deep rustic brown hue topped by a creamy off-white head and produced very good lace. The aroma has notes of chocolate, coffee, toasty malt, plum, and grassy herbal hops. The taste is almost all cheap crappy coffee and herbal bitterness without much depth. Yet again another piss poor organic beer, why in the heck can’t anyone brew a rich and flavorful organic beer? Simply weak in aroma and flavor, there are so many better stouts out there, avoid. North Coast should be ashamed to be part of this marketing ploy.

The malts in this beer were apparent in the aroma. The color was much redder than a stout normally is. The head was biege somewhat thick. The flavor was somewhere between mocha and bitter chocolate. There was some carbonation in the mouthfeel that surprised me. A good, but not a great beer.

Dark reddish-brown color with a lot of light penetration. Medium thin beige head that lasts pretty well, and thin sheets of lacing. Aroma of roasted malt and coffee. Medium-bodied and creamy with lots of roasted coffee flavor throughout. Other flavors like chocolate and malt are not as consistent though. The finish is mildly bitter coffee and a little watery. Above average overall, and not by far.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown body with a ruby tinges around the edges when held up to the light...also a medium-sized frothy tan head. The aroma is quite nice at first whiff - plenty of dry bitter coffee amidst oats and milk chocolate. The body seems fairly light and fluffy at first but then it kind of turns around...big bitter coffee roastiness up front leading into bitter chocolate flavours. quick dry and bitter finish. Pretty solid though it doesn’t have a very big range of flavours. Purchased at Bello Vino in Ann Arbor in April 2006.

12 oz bottle poured into a mug. Thick head. Color is black but slightly translucent. The smell is roasted coffee. Body is light for a stout, thin. The taste is off watered down coffee. Some coffee aftertaste left on the tongue. One demonsional and poorly executed.

Translucent brown with a medium off-white head. The aroma and flavor were not really that interesting...some roasted coffee, but that’s it. Thinnish watery feel...crisp on the tongue with a semi-dry finish. It’s always nice to try a new stout, but this one was not memorable.
