Commercial Description:
Brewed for Whole Foods. Old Plowshare is a full-flavored Celtic style Stout. Smooth and firm-bodied with the bold flavor notes of dark roasted malts. Because Old Plowshare is organic it remains true to the time-honored Irish tradition of respect for natural ingredients. A great pub classic or the perfect Black and Tan.

Opaque black with a half-inch tan head. Roasted malt aroma; roasted malt and coffee flavors. Thin mouthfeel and body. Kind of generic feeling, but not bad.

(Bottle from McKean and Charles) Pours very dark brown with some lighter brown and amberish highlights. Three fingers of fairly lumpy tan head. Aroma of chocolate and coffee. Mouthfeel fairly smooth, medium hefty. Lots of patches and light broken rings of lacing. Flavor is pretty much straight up dark and milk chocolate and coffee roast. A bit of bitterness sneaks up on back end. Very light grassiness toward finish. Fairly nice stout although kind of unremarkable - could be a little more aggressive.

Beer pours dark brown, clear with a one finger head and little lacing. Deep aroma of sweet roast, chocolate and milk. The flavor was like drinking a malted milkshake with a touch of roast. Lots of lactic flavors, which isn’t a big favorite of mine. Nice creamy mouthfeel. Not bad.

Opaque black with a small head. Aroma of whole coffee beans in a plastic bag that was filled with hay. Taste is dry, thin, and bitter. A decent dry stout but I know that the term "organic" has many meanings and not all of them good. A marketing term.

Bottle from Doboy. Clear, dark brown with ruby highlights under a medium tan head. Aroma has the requisite coffee and chocolate, albeit in a rather small dose. Medium body and carbonation, but jsut feels a littel thin. Some smoky sweet malt, dried out by the roasted malt bitterness and some subdued spicy hops. Rather understated and not a very remarkable.

Pours dark brown with reddish highlights and a tight, pillowy, beige head that deposits creamy lace in its wake. Chocolate and roasted malt are on the nose with a touch of spicy hops hiding in the background. Medium-bodied and soft, the mouthfeel is oily-slick with a roasted, lightly bitter finish. Dark roasted malt, ash & chocolate malt combine into a failry tasty beer. It almost seems like a blend of a robust porter and a dry stout. Regardless of what you call it, it is one of those beers which comes together in a way that the sum is greater than its parts; a solid, quaffable stout.
