Commercial Description:
Brewed for Whole Foods. Old Plowshare is a full-flavored Celtic style Stout. Smooth and firm-bodied with the bold flavor notes of dark roasted malts. Because Old Plowshare is organic it remains true to the time-honored Irish tradition of respect for natural ingredients. A great pub classic or the perfect Black and Tan.

12 oz bottle. Small tan head and jet black color. Aroma is light coffee and black licorice. Taste is three day old espresso with a decent hop bite. Smooth and dry with bittersweet chocolate. Tastes like Old Rasputen Light.

Pours a semi-clear brown, with a tan head. Aromas are chocolate, caramel, and roasted malt. Flavors are chocolate, roasted malt, ans some bitter coffee. A nice, but not special stout. Thanks to Andre for this bottle.

Bottle: Dark brown, nearly black, moderate light beige foamy head, quite nice lacing.   Roasted malt nose, slight sourness, a bit of cocoa and darkened chocolate.   Smooth burnt malt flavor, slight lactose like sweetness, very low hop profile.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate, not very heavy or big as you might think for a stout.   Clean finish, somewhat dry but not overly done.   Lingering cocoa and semi-sweetened dark chocolate.   Yea, this is quite clean actually.   Smooth, not big, but quite tasty and very sessionable.

A vigorous pour into my 25cl tulip glass produces a frothy, not quite two-finger thick, lightly browned, tan colored head. The beer is a deep, concentrated, dark brown color that shows a concentrated red color when held up to the light. The aroma has a rich, expressive, dark malt character to it that is a mix of aromatic notes of sweet dark chocolate, espresso beans, malted milk shakes, browned saltine crackers and a touch of dusty, almost basement like in some way, malt. I really like the aroma of this beer, purely dark malt driven, but it has quite a bit going on with that & strikes a nice balance.

The carbonation and the dark malt combine to contribute a thin, lightly acidic quality to the front of my first draught of this beer. The middle and finish though gain a fullness and a malt sweetness / richness that is quite nice. A quick swirl of my glass gets rid of the excess carbonation (which wasn’t more than at a medium level to begin with). The beer is now much smoother all around which accents the chocolate malt flavors and darkly sweet malt notes much more nicely. The finish has just a touch of burnt grain acidity as well as a roasted bitterness to it, both of which are light enough that they only serve to balance the sweeter dark malt notes found up front.

This is a solid Stout, much less organic one. I would definitely be happy to drink more of these. The mixture of rich chocolate notes with the sharper, roasted grain flavors is just about perfectly balanced & this beer is just so quaffable.

A great stout, I love the use of oraganic ingrediants. Dark roasted coffee, thin but not watery. A great addition

Turbid dark brown pour with off-white head. Aroma of roasty chocoff, dark malts, some molasses and nuts. The flavor is malty and roasty, with some chocoff and molasses hints. Medium palate.

This came from the Bottle Barn in Santa Rosa, CA not Whole Foods. It poured a very dark brown, almost black, with a fat tan head and very nice lacing rings. Nose of roasted malts, coffee, and some chocolate. Rich and creamy mouthfeel. Flavor is malty with a lot of bitterness from the hops. Very nice.
