wheresthepath (252), Buckinghamshire, England Jul 4, 2008 [500ml bottle from The Little Beer Shop, Blofield, Norfolk] Pours deep brown with a negligible but lasting light brown head. Slight carbonation. Slightly bitter at first from the dominant flavour of burnt malt. Lots of treadle there too, with some chocolate (less than you’d expect from the name), a little coffee and an odd hint of celery. Treacle takes over at the end leaving a very sweet and sticky mouthfeel but still with a lingering hint of dusty burnt malt. A drier finish would improve this a lot.
cgarvieuk (2541), Edinburgh, Scotland Oct 6, 2008 Bottle at home ... Thanks to Fin for the Top recomendation of a Jet garage for 300 beer selection ... This one on opening smelt a bit sour (some others had gone off) But a huge sigh of relief this one was ok ... Deep black medium lived tan head ... nice chocolate roast ... little chalky ... deep soft roast malts ... quite a lot of chocolte ... low bitterness and medium body ... very nice. haddonsman (1191), Derby, Derbyshire, England Oct 5, 2008 Bottled. Roasted and burnished and sprinkled with chocolate. Robust and bitter and ruddy wonderful. MiP (6029), Flensburg, Germany Oct 3, 2008 Bottle, 5.5%. Weak roast barley aroma. Very dark brown colour, clear. Good roasted flavour, slightly malty and slightly roasted. Balanced well by the alcohol which gives more flavour and fullness than the ABV would suggest. RichardGretton (2681), Leicestershire, England Aug 9, 2008 Bottle. Black beer with a strong head. The aroma is lightly malty and roasted, and the flavour is bitter and lightly roasted. Overall a nice smooth roasted and bitter beer.
