Commercial Description:
Broken Halo IPA is a beer produced in the spirit of traditional IPA products shipped from the UK to India in the late 1800s. The almost excessive amounts of Cascade and Columbus hops used in Broken Halo give it notable citrus and grapefruit aromas and flavors. The beer bitterness measures high but tastes smooth due to the full-bodied, Caramel malt sweetness. The finish is juicy, clean, and short lived. A devilishly bold, heavenly smooth India Pale Ale. malts: PALE, CARAMEL 10L & 20L,carapils hops: ALCHEMY, CASCADE, zeus

It are otay. I may even like it. I may like it far better when it’s on sale or free, but still. It sure as hell isn’t my favorite IPA, but for one that’s now given an affiliation with AB, I suppose that not fully sucking should be equated as a most positive thing? That I’ve had probably a case of this or more and still not seen fit to give this any deeper thought sheds light on my feeling that it rates no better than a middle of the road IPA. See: good if on sale ....

Pours a deep gold, slightly hazy with a firm white head. Good lacing. Aroma is a blast of herbal pine. Flavor is quite dry, resiny with hops dominating the palate. Finshes clean and dry. Sort of straddles the line between American PA and IPA. Overall quite fresh.

Nothing outstanding about this beer, but there is a good citrus hop character, fairly fat malt. The malt it probably a bit too caramelly, makes the mouthfeel a bit heavy. But it’s all cool, no complaints really.

Small offwhite head, fair retention with a little spotty lace. Thinly hazy golden color, kinda ugly really. Nose of citrus, orange, a little honey and maybe a touch piney. Body is lightly medium with a light hop resin. Lightly coating on the palate. Citrus flavors up front, light grassiness, caramel malt shining through. Tangy metallic flavors arrive as it warms up. Notes of orange peel and just lightly fruity. Finish is fairly dry and uneventful. Thanks to that Texan fly for this one!

Bottle. Pours a cloudy golden color with a very little white head. This one had a very stong citrus aroma with hints of vanilla. The taste was fruity with a nice dry finish. a very good IPA.

Gold pour with white head. Nose of citrus from the cascades. Flavor is all cascade up front with a very sweet lemon malt. Finish is watery and slightly hoppy.

A 12 oz bottle with the date it was bottled on in small print on the front. The beer poured a very gold body with a off white small head, descent lacing. The smell was a lemon-lime citrus that makes your mouth water. The mouth feel was somewhat coating with a bitter hop flavor. The carbonation was low. A every day IPA.

Actually, I was pleasantly surprised by this Widmer IPA. The cascade hops are evident, but there really is no way I’d call it "excessive." This ranks middle-of-the-road on the IBU scale as far as I can tell, so the fact it is fairly well balanced isn’t too surprising, but the grapefruit and grassiness is there. It’s nothing I’ll go out of my way to find but a great fall back at most bars.
