Commercial Description:
Broken Halo IPA is a beer produced in the spirit of traditional IPA products shipped from the UK to India in the late 1800s. The almost excessive amounts of Cascade and Columbus hops used in Broken Halo give it notable citrus and grapefruit aromas and flavors. The beer bitterness measures high but tastes smooth due to the full-bodied, Caramel malt sweetness. The finish is juicy, clean, and short lived. A devilishly bold, heavenly smooth India Pale Ale. malts: PALE, CARAMEL 10L & 20L,carapils hops: ALCHEMY, CASCADE, zeus

Bottled. Thanks larsniclas. Clear golden colour with brief white head. Grapey, orangey aroma. Bit milky in mouthfeel, with solid grape-juice backbone in flavour, where the focus is here. Bitterness is just medium, and at that a bit papery. Pretty clean IPA here, and not at all astonishing.

12 oz. bottle, from Fred Meyer in Portland area. Pours hazy, bright amber orange with a miniscule white head that quickly receded to an edge ring. Aroma was surprisingly modest, what’s discernable features lightlly toasty and citrus fruity malts, floral notes and more citrus in the hops. Flavor has summer fruits and hints of toffe in the malts, with bold hop flavors - primarily of grapefruit, evergreen needles and floral notes along with a spicy binte in the finish. Medium body and prickly-creamy carbonation. This all adds up to a quite servicable west coast style IPA, though not in the same league as my favorites.

A vigorous pour produces a three-finger thick, frothy, somewhat large-bubbled, pale tan colored head that leaves some nice, spotty lace patterns on the sides of my tulip as it slowly subsides. The beer is a brilliantly clear copper color as it sits on my desk, but shows a bright, golden-copper color when held up to the light. The aroma is a mix of cracker-like malt and citrus / pin hops, though definitely leans towards the latter. Aromas of orange peel, grapefruit, light pine (towards the end) melds with a husky, saltine-cracker like malt character and perhaps a touch of honey-like malt sweetness.

Somewhat dry up front, the beer picks up a touch of malt sweetness towards the middle with helps to accent the fruity hop character. Bitter hop notes and a grassy, herbal, pine-sap like hop-flavor are more accented than in the aroma. The bitterness is nice bracing from the get go, though, even with the light malt profile, this beer could use even a bit more bitterness. There is quite a bit of citrus flavors here, it leans towards grapefruit and tangelo.

A decent IPA, despite being an IPA, it could use a bit more malt character that would help to accent the existing hop character a bit more. I do like how easy drinking this beer is, it is quite quaffable.

Bottle. Pours a dark slightly hazy gold. Small to no head. Laces well on the side of the glass. Nose is citrus/acidic with a bit of pine. Attack is nice and hoppy and bitter but very light, easy to drink. finish is a bit ’off’, bitter but some other flavours floating around. not a bad IPA.

Sweet and fresh citrusy hop nose; bready sweet front end and a quick, bitter finish; creamy body; on the sweeter side for an IPA, but quite drinkable. Good beer, overall.....not terribly interesting, but very good for a Widmer product.

had a bottle of this in seattle over the weekend. poured a copper hue, with a tan off white head. slight grassy flax seed nose. more fresh hops up front and a decent backbone of malt a bit above average and easy to drink. better then i anticipated.

Bottle from Bottleworks. Golden color with small head. Solid hop aroma, not strong. Sharp IPA taste that never really comes on too strong. Good, but nothing special as far as IPA’s are concerned. Easy drinking IPA.
