Commercial Description:
Broken Halo IPA is a beer produced in the spirit of traditional IPA products shipped from the UK to India in the late 1800s. The almost excessive amounts of Cascade and Columbus hops used in Broken Halo give it notable citrus and grapefruit aromas and flavors. The beer bitterness measures high but tastes smooth due to the full-bodied, Caramel malt sweetness. The finish is juicy, clean, and short lived. A devilishly bold, heavenly smooth India Pale Ale. malts: PALE, CARAMEL 10L & 20L,carapils hops: ALCHEMY, CASCADE, zeus

Actually, I was pleasantly surprised by this Widmer IPA. The cascade hops are evident, but there really is no way I’d call it "excessive." This ranks middle-of-the-road on the IBU scale as far as I can tell, so the fact it is fairly well balanced isn’t too surprising, but the grapefruit and grassiness is there. It’s nothing I’ll go out of my way to find but a great fall back at most bars.

Golden color out of the bottle with a diminishing white head. Sharp citrus/grapefruit nose. Sweet grapefruit and orange juice citrus flavors with some buscuit malts. Hot hop burn on the tongue and a long orange peel bitterness in the finish. Easy drinking IPA.

Draft at the brewery tap. A golden beer with a thin beige head. The aroma is sweet and lovely grassy adn grapefruity. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of grass as well as grapefruit, leading to a dry bitter finish.

Tap at Flying Saucer, Houston. Pours an average dark gold with a nice head and clinging lace. Sweet and sour citrus dominate the nose, with a bit of orange tickling the olfactory from the back of the room. Flavors of grapefruit and pine are immediately noticeable, with orange finishing out each sip. Mouthfeel is not as slippery as I would like it to be, but it suffices enough to warrant a mention. A very nice and refreshing IPA, one worth revisiting.

Pale gold with some haze and a thin white head. Dank grapefruit zest and urea aroma. Clean, straightforward hop delivery. Nice citrus flavor with balancing malt sweetness and perfect bitterness. Nothing over the top but a well executed IPA.

Smells slightly skunked (which is strange because I’m in Portland) also like cascade hops and smashed rasins. Pours crystal clear and with zero head. Light amber color. Interesting flavor, not a hop explosion, but more of a subtle, fancy sensation. Very nice on the palate.

Pours a nice medium amber color. Aromas of hops/malts. Great hop flavors with malts and a dry finish.
