Commercial Description:
With its unique citrus character, smooth drinkability, and distinctive hop character, Drifter Pale Ale is truly an original. Brewed with generous amounts of Summit hops, a variety known for their intense citrus flavors and aromas, Drifter has a taste unique to the Pale Ale category. True to style, the bittering hops are perceptible enough to give the beer a crisp, clean, quenching finish, yet also soft enough to keep the beer smooth and balanced. 2006 GABF Silver Medal Winner

Bottle. Aroma is malt and grapefruit, slightly sweet. Amber body, off-white head. Flavor is distinctively grapefruit, but not the usual bitter grapefruit of an IPA. Instead, it’s moderately sweet pink grapefruit, and also hints of lime and other fruits. Lengthy fruity malt finish. Excellent.

Tallahassee, Fl. - Publix Supermarket - 12 oz bottle.Nice dark copper pour with a soft, white, quickly fading head. Nice fragrant aroma with strong, fresh sprucey notes - hint of flowers as well. Flavor is crisp and hoppy with some juicy grapefruit notes, resiny hop notes, sugar sweetness and just a hint of maple syrup. Mouthfeel is slightly sticky and about the right thickness for the style. Duly impressed.

Courtesy of Oscbert. Thanks for sharing man! Pours an amber with a small head. Aroma is nice; Piney, hoppy, and slightly grapefruity aroma. Flavor is creamy and malty, as well as hoppy. Palate is a little oily, with low carbonation. Very drinkable. Overall, good.

Poured a light amber with small head. Nothing amazing looking. The scent is strong on pine hops. Smells delicious and very similar to their Brrrr. Taste is killer. Very light and crisp with a punch of pine hops on the front, and finishes with a nice light grapefruit noted hop, with slight table sugar sweetness. Very good, not too heavy or malty or sweet, just very pleasant and packed with flavor. VERY drinkable. I can see how after 6 you might get some heartburn form the hops, but one of the better beers. its a shame Widmer doesnt get more respect, they have been killing it with their seasonals for the past couple years. well done Widmer guys.

Appearance: Pours a clear, dark copper body with a thin, fine, white head. Smell: Lightly grainy pale and caramel malt nose with a earthy, fruity, particularly citrusy hop scent. Taste: Unassuming pale and caramel maltiness with a medium level of sweetness. Tiny tinge of grains. Earthy, citrusy hops imparting a taste of infused citrus peels, though the overall bitterness remains light. Drying finish with a mere hint of lingering bitterness. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Drinkability: A decent, simple, but easily accessible American Pale Ale.

Clear copper pour with a thin yet lasting tan head. Citrusy hop aroma with some obvious malty/caramel undertones. Flavor is pretty hoppy and bitter, dominately citrus but there is a nice piney flavor as well. Finish is malty, slightly resinous with lingering citrus. Tasty.

On-tap at The Tavern (The Essex Resort): Comes off the tap a medium-amber color, looking much like an English ale/bitter. Very little head with no retention. White bubbles round the edge. A hugely aromatic, but somewhat simple nose. Lots of citrus, grapefruit, lemon, gooseberry. Very similar aromas to a New Zealand Sauvignon blanc. It’s medium- to light-bodied, and leaning on the crisp side from the hops, but there is a nice malt presence too. The flavors are dominated by the hop character, but the beer is not overly bitter. Lots and lots of grapefruit, with underpinnings of cereal and lightly toasted malt. An interesting beer to be sure. Drinkability suffers a little because it’s really focused on that grapefruit note and it builds up sip after sip, but was really surprised at how much I liked it.

The aroma is very hoppy and malty with grapefruit, pine, caramel, and sour dough bread. The appearance is amber with an average head. The flavor is like the aroma without being astringent. The palate is smooth and the finish citrusy but not soapy. This beer is simply stated and that is all it needs to do. There is nothing here but flavor and no complexity was needed. Way more than I expected. Nice beer.
