Commercial Description:
Cherry Oak Doppelbock is a rich ale, cold-fermented with dark sweet and red tart cherries, then conditioned on new, heavily toasted American oak. The result is a dark lustrous brew with up-front malty sweetness and cherry fruit notes completed by caramel, dark chocolate, and toasted oak undertones. The complex flavor profile balances the impressive 9% ABV and 40 IBUs.

Bottle. Pours a brune body with an off white head. Cherry strawberry notes, with a strong etoh warming. Some etoh latent fruit accents with a milder chocolate, coffee, and oak. Decent.

22 ounce bottle. Pours a dark cloudy brown with a decent tan head that lasts. Taste is of malt, cherry, caramel, alcohol, chocolate, oak and some hops. Slightly tart with a minor bitter and alcohol aftertaste. The aroma is similar, but more alcohol comes through. Smooth and easy to drink. A nice holiday beer.

I have always been intrigued by cherry flavored beers. It seems to be a fruit that many brewers try to play with but most of the time they just get it wrong and dominate an often overly simple beer with cherry flavor. This one got it right! The dopplebock is done very nicely with rich full body and sweet tongue, with just enough coffee/chocolate flavor to give it a nice roasted background, and the cherry flavor is very subtle and tasted on the back end. This is a really nice beer.

22 oz. bottle from Plaza Liquors - Pours a brown color with a one finger thick light tan head. Light lacing. Aroma is dark esters, cherries, and faint oak. Flavor is toasted malt, dark esters, and a tad bit of herbal hops. The esters linger in the finish. Medium body. A decent beer, but it’s something I would not buy again.

22oz bottle 12/21/09 (Binny’s-Downers Grove)-Pours a dark brown with a full tan head that dissipates into a small covering. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, caramel, cherries and slight oak. Taste of cherries, sweetness, oak, and slight alcohol. This medium bodied brew hides the ABV very well and is pretty well balanced. This is not too bad and was not expecting much and it lived up to those expectations.

Bottle. Pours clear, effervescent tawny with a smallish fizzy light tan head, somewhat lasting with fair lacing. Aroma is heavy malt (caramel, nutty), light earthy hops, light bread-like yeast with notes of candied cherries, toasted oak, and alcohol (solvent-like). Some off aromas of stomach acid (butyric) indicating sanitation issues. Flavor is fairly sweet caramel malt with bitter hops and slight cherry notes. Again, the stomach acid is in the flavor too. Some oak notes at the end. Creamy start with a spicy and dry finish; a tad too attenuated. I was hoping for more from this beer given that they took a doppelbock, aged it on oak and cherries, but something went wrong here.

I was very surprised by this one. Found a bottle for 7 bucks at the local liquor store. Pours bing cherry red with a quickly diminishing tan head. Cherry, chocolate aroma. Nice balance of cherry and bock taste. Not too bad. Better than I expected.

Pours reddish brown with a pretty beige head and a cherry aroma. The flavor is chocolate cherry with a tasty oak finish. Doesn’t really remind me of a doppelbock, but it’s a very nice drink.
