Commercial Description:
Cherry Oak Doppelbock is a rich ale, cold-fermented with dark sweet and red tart cherries, then conditioned on new, heavily toasted American oak. The result is a dark lustrous brew with up-front malty sweetness and cherry fruit notes completed by caramel, dark chocolate, and toasted oak undertones. The complex flavor profile balances the impressive 9% ABV and 40 IBUs.

bottle. tawny burgundy, light haze, toast colored head. warm nose of cherry skin is on the sweet side, the oak is robust and coarse and the doppelbock seems smothered by them both. rich and syrupy texture up front, thins out and turns medicinally sweet across the back, literally like robitussin with the lingering chalky flavor and texture of chewed aspirin. the cherry in no way resembles actual fruit in this beer, maybe it’s the overdone oak or perhaps the amount of sugar, but it tastes quite close to a hangover headache on first sip. zero chocolate malt, zero caramel, pretty much just a straight shot of cherry cough syrup and harsh oak.

Bottle shared by badnewsbeers. Hazy red-brown body, no head with a narrow ring of tan carbonation. Tart nose with caramel and cherry notes. A bitter initial flavor is quickly whisked away by tart cherry syrup and musty oak notes, which fade to reveal a solid base of caramel, toast, brown sugar, and toffee malts. The tight, sharp carbonation enhances the flavors. Dryish finish. The cherry is not cloying or too sweet. Interesting, solid beer.

Some oxidation apparent in the nose, paper and sherry. not much wood here nor cherry fruit. Softened roast flavors - was this once a stout? Sweet, tangy.

22 oz. bottle. Sep0909 on the label. Pours a dark amber/mahogany color with a smallish tan head. A subtle aroma that features some caramel, tangy cherries, and toasty oak. Full body. The flavor starts off with some sweet caramel and dark chocolate. Toasty toffee and tangy cherries in the transition. Finishes with a hint of vanilla and an oakiness. OK, but would definitely improve with some aging.

Transparent dark amber copper with a thin, clingy-lacing off-white head. Aroma of rich sweet doughy dark caramel with a touch of oak and black cherries. Starts with good caramel malty fullness and a fresh woody oak balance with dark cherry fruitiness before a toasty woody finish. A pretty enjoyable and unique brew.

22 oz. bottle. Pours a deep, slightly hazed chestnut with a moderate off-white head that lasted through the first quarter of the glass and left a few scattered patches of lace. Pleasant aroma of black cherry, rich sweet malt, and some mild oak. These same qualities extend into the flavor but seem to lose something in the process. While I can identify the cherry, sweet malt and oak, they all seem muddied and underwhelming and just never pull it together. Mild bitterness at the finish. Doppelbock is a style I particularly enjoy, so this beer was especially disappointing.

22 ounce bottle purchased at Nugget in Woodland, CA. Aroma definitely has a little cherry funkiness to it. Perhaps a little Brett. That initial aroma is offset by more traditional doppelbock aroma. Molasses, brown sugar, and metallic lager undertones. A very intriguing aroma. Moderately transparent amber body with a ruddy hue. Has a nice, creamy, attractive light tan head. Leaves some good lacing. Starts with some cherry, fruity notes, before it becomes creamy, woodsy, and toasted in the middle. Hints of chocolate and molasses in the middle. Finishes with a little more cherry flavor and some slight tartness. Tobacco flavors linger. This is well-balanced and very enjoyable. Great work!

Bottle shared with Angeloregon... Poured amberish/brown with a thin head. Oak and cherry-like fruits on the nose. Noticeable esters with a grenadine-like cherry character. Smoked wood-like notes and a malty finish.

22oz – Crimson brown, light tan creamy head. Dark cherry and toasted wood aromas warm to undercurrents of caramelized toffee bits throughout. Rich velvety flavors of semi-sweet oaked black cherry balance on a soft earthed chocolate-caramel foundation. Full bodied, soft carbonation, toasty, light cherry finish. Well put together, but I’m guessing some short cellar time might round this out further…
