Commercial Description:
A creamy and toasty ale, brewed with oatmeal, five malt varieties and roasted barley. Hops include a blend of Cascade, Willamette, and Tettnang hops. This lush, full stout has a rich black color and a dry finish that is smooth and gently hopped.

Smells very sweet and dark. Pours an almost opaque black with a small brown head. Taste is nice and creamy with chocolate and caramel malt tastes. Nice oatmeal stout, not spectacular, but good.

12 oz bottle. Thin light brown head, opaque coloring, mild aroma. Smooth stout taste, a tad watery, but still flavorful. Considering it came from Flying Dog I’m a bit disappointed, but it’s still drinkable. I doubt I would seek it out again, but would enjoy it being part of a variety pack. Although, after further review (and rereading the description of a Sweet Stout) this does meet those characteristics quite nicely, so I’ve added a couple points for that.

12 oz bottle-Pours a dark black color w/no head. Roasted malt aroma; flavors of roasted malt, oats, chocolate, & a touch of coffee. Has a touch of sweetness & a fair amount of carbonation. Kind of a thin mouthfeel to it. Overall, I’d call this a standard sweet stout. Solid & easy to drink, if a little thinner than I prefer in a stout.

Had this beer on 6/12/1998. Color is a deep black with low carbonation and head. Aroma has a rich roasted malt scent with a touch of sweetness in it. Taste is thick and a little sharp with a bitter end. It starts off with a good body, as it goes down you find it is not creamy. A mild roasted malt flavor comes on followed by a dry feel, and finishes with a strong but good bitterness. Overall I feel its a poor Stout, although it has good roasted malt flavors as well as a good bitterness on the end, it just isn’t very good. Also it doesn’t fit in it’s category well nor dose it fit it’s own description.

350 ml bottle from market in DC. Dark brown with a faint grainy aroma. Watery palate and watery taste, but notes of milk chocolate and cereal.

Courtesy of Quake1028. Pours fairly dark but not opaque with dark brown head. The aroma is light with a mixture of roasty malts, burnt malts, faint wood and hints of fruity esters. The taste starts roasty and chocolaty. It becomes both sweet and burnt malts by midway. Into the finish a faint spice hoppiness shows up for a moment before more chocolate malts join back in along with a mild oatmeal twang and malt roastiness.

12oz bottle. Dark brown pour, mocha edges. Small tan head, quick to vacate, leaves some foam and bubbles. Very spotty, sparse lacing. Nose is chocolate candy bars, bitter chocolate chips, coffee beans, vanilla extract and molasses. Flavor hits all the sweet stout notes, chocolate, coffee, creamer, oatmeal, chocolate malts. Nothing exceptional flavor wise, but nothing offensive. Creamy, sticky palate, a bit thin, but appropriate to style. Finish is bitter, roasty and then full sweetness. Very long as well.

Dark and oily with a soft white head that didn’t stick around for converstation. Lots of chocolate and some espresso in the nose. Full bodied and oily with a slightly burnt taste; mostly I taste smooth dark chocolate. Yay.
