| 2.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 2/5 | 5/10 | 2/5 | 10/20 | Aug 15, 2007 Walnut pour, inky brown in glass; half-inch sandy head. No lace. Fruity esters- raisin and limon- and cocoa with marshmallows. Pinesap hop aromatics. Initially tangy flavor followed by malt and berries. Sugarwater sweetness and a hint of diacetyl. Only faintly roasty. Tingly sweet-tart finish. Light bodied and creamy. Weird fake chocolate and woody/lima bean aftertaste. Flavor is so tame that alcohol taste comes through. No obvious flaws, yet a very safe and underwhelming interpretation. I would have rated it higher had the label read brown ale. bubbleflubber (898), Collinsville, Virginia, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 12, 2007 On tap at the Microfestivus ’07, and my 2nd place vote for Beer of the Day... Black opaque pour with a huge 4-finger tan head that leaves thick, coating lace. The nose is of mocha and coffee. Nice semi-sweet chocolate flavors with mocha-espresso overtones. The blended hop finish is perfectly integrated within the pull. All sections of the palate are highlighted in a linear fashion, which is an excellent quality. A round body and creamy mouthfeel make this very quaffable and memorable. keepersj12 (813), Sicklerville, New Jersey, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Aug 5, 2007 A good oatmeal stout. Small brown head, dark brown pour. The oatmeal comes through in the aroma along with chocolate malt and some coffee. Very smooth and dry without much hoppiness. Aurelius (2654), Tallahassee, Florida, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 31, 2007 Wow, this was a nice surprise. Big roasty aroma. Fair, brownie label, rich brown brew, thinnish head. Lightly sweet, coffeeish, west coast hopping, though not too much. Coffeeish in the high palate, some chocolate. Medium mouth, a bit chalky, chocolate-chickory finish. It was ironic that while I was in Frederick, MD scouting out the brewpubs, there was a Frederick beer waiting for me at home from the Ale-in-the-Mail club. Slipped this rating in under the wire for the month of July 2007. crazyvin (1254), New York, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jul 20, 2007 Poured a beautiful blackish brown hue with a thin tan head, had the head been thicker it would have been perfect. Aroma was a great mix of oats, chocolate and,mild coffee.
Flavor was initially sweet of cocoa notes, but was balanced out buy roasted oats. Smooth finish, but could have been fuller still good though. cjw163 (108), hummelstown, Pennsylvania, USA

| 2.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 5/10 | 4/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 11/20 | Jul 1, 2007 Bottle. Light cocoa aroma. Dark black-brown color with small film of a head. Lightly sweet black coffee flavor initially with a chocolate/oatmeal finish. Moderate carbonation. A nice tasting beer - would be better with a more pronounce aroma and flavor as it came across kind of weak for me. shendrix (478), Waukesha, Wisconsin, USA
| 3.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 27, 2007 A very pleasant stout. The nose is primarily caramel and sugars, with a touch of alcohol. On the palate you get a nice infusion of oats balanced out with strong barley notes and a smooth, caramelized malt flavor. In the finish this brew is slightly hoppy with a nicely dry bite.
