Midnight Sun is a black porter style beer, created from a blend of malted barley, oats, roasted barley and chocolate malt, balanced with a generous handful of hops and a wee bit of fresh root ginger. We really like it and hope you do too!

500 ml bottle, courtesy of Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is 5.6%. Black colour, big to moderate tan head. Nice roasted aroma, notes of dark chocolate and coffee. The flavour is distinctly roasty throughout, notes of coffee, hints of dark bitter chocolate. The finish is fairly bitter, both from the hops and the roasted barley. The finish also has a slight spicy "burn", but I am not sure I would identify it as ginger, if I hadn’t read it on the label. Hints of resin in the aftertaste. All in all a very enjoyable beer.

Bottle: Literally black, small beige layer; solid dry bitter-sweet flavour, light to medium bodied; distinctive - quite dry - roast-malty and fruity (blackcurrant) nose; dry roast-malty and fruity-spicy (label says: ginger) finish, followed by a lingering bitter (malty and hoppy) aftertaste. Good, spicy Porter, but the ginger-root is not really necessary......

500 ml bottle sampled@RBNAG 2009, Cardinal. Dark brown body, almost black with a nice beige head. Flavor has some kind of salt maltflavor, slightly burnt, spicy with a light hint of ginger, moderate bitter, dry and thin without being light. Quite unusually, tasty, harmonic, complex and really nice.

Bottled 50cl. Pitch black. Lacing beige head. The ginger root really gives this beer a lovely spicy component. Good biterness. Dry finish. Remarkably pleasant.

bottle from Tesco Hereford. Deep black colour with a mid-sized beige head. Aroma of roasetd malts and fruit. Full-bodied, intensively malty with lots of roast flavours, chocolate, plums, prunes, raisnins, chocolate, berries and spices. Lingerign finish. A superb beer!

Bottle@Cardinal, Stavanger. A layer of tan bubbles over a ruby edged, near black body. Dryish aroma of cocoa and roasted dark malts. Herbal notes, some sourness and hint of ginger. Dry, heavily roasted and ashy malt flavor. Bitter coffee, kind of sharp-tasting herbs/spices, along with a good amount of bittering hops. Mouthfeel is pleasantly creamy. Medium body strenght. Malty, light astringent, light bitter finish. Unusual this one, but overall a tasty and easy drinkable Porter.

22nd June 2008. The root ginger works well giving this otherwise mild porter a dense herby flavour.

Black color with small brownish head. Aroma of hops, roasted malt. Mouthfeel is very smooth but rather light. Tastes of coffee and remarkably bitter piney hops. I guess the ginger further adds to the bitterness. A decent porter, I approve of the bitterness.

50cl dark brown bottle with black label, "Midnight Sun". Pours a pitch black wih a medium, creamy beige head that collapses quickly. Generous lacing though. Intense aroma of "double chocolate" roasted malt, some corn (for want of a better term) and coffee. Medium-to heavy-bodied porter with thick, slightly earthy mouth feel. Medium carbonation, a little surprising for a porter-style black. Coffeeish malts score heavily on the palate, with a slight dark, semi-sweet chocolate note for balance. Fairly dry and bitter for a porter. Coffee is again omniprsent towards the finishing line, with a dry end and lingering espresso after taste. This is heavy stuff, a vast improvement on last night’s "Black" from the same brewery (3.1). Strong beer for winter evenings, so strong as not to be truly sessionable. But as a single pint on a cold evening, definitely recommended!
