Commercial Description:
Rich and smooth, AleWerks Porter is a traditional example from colonial times. A seven malt backbone is balanced with Fuggles hops. Sit back and relax after dinner with a pint. English Porter was first brewed, around 1720. It quickly became the beer of choice in England, Ireland and Scotland where it was brewed in ever increasing quantity. It remained popular well into the 1800’s. Brewer Robert Hare of Philadelphia produced the first commercial porter in America (1776). After the war, his porter was in great demand, buoyed no doubt by President Washington’s 1789 “Buy American” policy and his pronouncement that he would drink only porter made in America. Much of this porter came from Hare's brewery, and some from that of Ruben Haines.

Aroma: Chocolate/cocoa, good roastiness. Otherwise clean, very nice and very appropriate for style. Appearance: Pretty much opaque, lowe head retention. Flavor: Soft chocolate and roast notes, with a good solid sweet malt base. Toffee in the finish. Very smooth, nice for style. Palate: Silky smooth, luscious sweetish malt finish. Very nice. Medium bodied. Overall: Very good porter, solid dark malt character and great mouthfeel. Very drinkable.

Bottle from Vintage Cellar. Very dark brown color with a significant tan head. Interesting aromas of coffee, nuts, dark toasted malt and chocolate. Medium body with creamy carbonation. Flavor is a tad sour, with chocolate, coffee and dark malt. Finish is rather dry and has a very slight sour note. Rich and tasty porter.

Bottle. Black/brown body that hardly lets any light through. Almost no head, scant and tan. On the nose, molasses, roast, malty base and chocolate. Much the same in flavor with a licorice component and a nice slight bitterness to the end. On the low-end of carbonation, finishes a little long. A good porter. In flavor was like a mix between an Anchor Porter and Bell’s Kalamazoo.
