argo0 (6284), Washington DC, USA Jun 27, 2005 (12oz bottle) Big tan head atop a dark brown body possessing red highlights. Aroma is medium sweet, chocolate, some lactic sourness, nutty, light roasty. Taste is medium sweet, chocolate, earthy, some roasty, grapefruit, light coffee, lactic sour. Light-medium body. Other than the Willamette hop presence, seems a traditional version of the style, and does a nice job of balancing the malts with hops. CaptainCougar (4687), Rockville, Maryland, USA Mar 2, 2005 It’s funny, the label really reminds me of Avery Old Jubilation. Must be the color scheme. Anyway, pours a nearly opaque dark brown with a thick, frothy and well-lacing light tan head. Lightly roasted aroma has nice caramel malty presence and a touch of milk chocolate. Body is kinda thin and has a hint of tartness amongst a mild candy corn sweetness before a dry roasty finish. This could stand to be a little maltier, but still goes down smooth. hopscotch (4678), Vero Beach, Florida, USA Oct 28, 2005 Bottle... Very dark, crimson beer with a small, creamy, tan head. Good retention. Vanilla, roasted nuts, cocoa and caramel in the nose. The flavor is generously bittered and moderately burnt. Medium-bodied and fizzy. Lengthy, burnt, bitter finish. JPDIPSO (4344), Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, USA Aug 16, 2004 Very dark brown color with a small dense tan head. Sweet roasted black malt with a backdrop of hops that resemble corn silage. Starts with a sweet cola and coffee flavor. Continues with a mildly acidic black malt flavor. A very straight forward porter. Thanks to DocLock. DocLock (4175), Lower Pottsgrove, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 13, 2004 Bottle, from K-mart (anyone going to Williamsburg should hit Farm Fresh and the Pottery Barn for a nice brew selection at decent prices). Pours dark brown with a nice, creamy, white head and lace. Aroma of malt, coffee, chocolate, port. Tastes very malty, with coffee, chocolate, and some red winish qualities at the finish. Not super rich, but nicely balanced. Good complexity.
