Commercial Description: Much like a moonrise seen through the haze of a warm summer night, this light, unfiltered, pale orange Belgian ale defies description and showcases the limitless possibilities when willing to step outside the definitions of style. Combining the "wit-son" yeast blend used in the Belgian Fog along wit toasted rice, barley and wheat malts, citrus fruits, black tea and French lavender petals gives this elixir a calming aromatheraputic quality… bask in the light and scent of the moonbeam. 4.9% abv. 16 IBU's.
July 17-19, 2008: Willoughby Moonbeam has a clody, pale golden yellow color and tons of corriander in the aroma. It has orangy-like citrus in the flavor and is spicy. The corriander stays long after swallowing. This beer has a medium-light to medium body and feels soft and mellow in the mouth.
Draught sample at Pigskin Sports Bar & Grill in Athens, Ohio during Ohio Brew Week 2008. Rating #2 for this beer.
I only tried a single pint of this but that was more than enough. An interesting take on a Belgian beer this is dominated predominately by the floral aspects. As a result I found it to be both fun and boring. It’s fun for being a bit outside the normal expectations. On the other hand after half a pint I was ready for something else.
Aroma / Appearance - The cloudy body was impossible to see through. There wasn’t much of a head due to the generous pour. The nose was strongly floral with lilic, lavender and citrus standing out the most. Otherwise there was not much depth. It does do well with its simplicity howver.
Flavor / Palate - The first sip was not what I would have expected from a beer (even a Belgian). Tasting more like a slightly alcoholic orange juice there was a trace of light hoppiness before the floraly aspects took over. The wheaty finish grounded things nicely. A rosy aftertaste lingered for a long time. Overall this was nice though more fruity than I would have liked.
