Bottle pours a deep, dark brown with puffy, beige, long-lasting head. Sweetish nose of roasted malts with notes of chocolate and cola. Flavor begins only a touch sweet, with some dark fruit notes, before rolling into this trifecta of roasted malt, mild bitterness, and interesting tartness. Medium body. Damn tasty and no real flaws. Loved that mild malty-bitter-tart finish. Why did I avoid these beers before? Is it that creepy monk on the label? Will he tell me his secrets? Only one way to find out. | 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 18, 2007 From bottle at Camargue, Antwerpen. Very dark brown with a creamy, tan head that leaves nice lacing. Great raisins and nut aroma. Nose is promising chocolate and rum as well. Chocolate flavours move to the front, followed by slightly tart berries. The taste remains on the sweet side. Surprisingly light body for all the flavours, but still decent. Positively surprised by this beer.It is also well beyond its best before-date (June 2004?) iep (229), Amsterdam, Netherlands
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Jun 27, 2007 Deep mahogany colored body, with a longlasting head. Fruity, spicy, floral (and somewhat medicinal) aroma with citric notes, as well as peach and mango, and spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, some dark sugar/caramel, plus a surprisingly strong hop prescence. Taste is sweet and fruity up front, medicinal, rounded, with some dry hopbitterness in the long and malty finish. Good complexity, and also a good balance. Lively mouthfeel. Great dubbel. | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | May 7, 2007 Updated: Dec 13, 2007Ill-advised nightcap, Reading Fest 07. Deep mahogany pour with fingers of beige lace. Very unusual, fruity, slightly strawberryish nose for a Dubbel. A big glug of spice. Sweet, creamy, fruity Dubbel with hints of caramel and licorice. Would love to try it sober. (Re-rate, sober) This has got ’4’ stamped all over it. Aroma sour, lambic-like and a blindfold ringer for Orval. Plus added soy, damp earth, sesame. And blueberry, come to think of it. Mouth blueberry muffin sweet, but held in check by Mann’s Brown bready malt, plummy fruit and a dull edge of Flemish/spontaneous sourness. Belgian sessions of the highest order. Almost lemony like Harviestoun Try’d and Tested. Some liquorice to finish, with lots of loafy malt afters. A bit watery at the end, but way better than I didn’t remember it. The sort of beer that makes me want to drink a lot of beer.
(Memo to myself: buy lots of this).
