Deeply complex with a labyrinth of flavours that twist and turn for long, long minutes after each sip. The alcohol is well used to add warmth and depth and is always in the background behind the burning autumnal forest of flavours. Now sour like long damp oak, now creamy like camembert, now dark with chocolate. Rum and raisin and a touch of vanilla. Each person will find their own delights. Not sweet like a Trappist (there’s no added candy sugar), but well balanced with a creamy bitterness that lingers and develops for hours. Like Westvleteren’s beer this is only available from the brewery, but harder still, it’s only available once a year. My first, and probably only, full five points! BrainDead (30), Derby, England

Packed with flavours that come wave after wave. Great palate. A classic, deserving of the reputation. TomSpears (65), Norfolk, England

Woodfordes have suffered of late and are not as good as they used to be (in my opinion), but they are still one of the better regionals. Had this a few times bottled (not seen it in any of the pubs), and it's a genuine litte stunner all right. Lots of flavour, and a good old ale or barley wine. Probably more old ale really. Really rich and fruity and with a soft kick - not a rough kick, but just that edge of alcohol so you know what your dealing with. nickdolan (1), Twickenham, England does not count | 4.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Feb 1, 2006 All it is cracked up to be! Lovely ruby - brown in colour. It is the ideal Christmas Pudding ale! bu11zeye (5564), Frisco, Texas, USA

Malt, chocolate and raisons are coming to my nose. Nice red orange color with a medium foamy head, flat carbonation. Wonderful very pleasant chocolate, bitter, plums, caramel taste. Alcohol stays nicely behind. Mouth fullfills with the taste, long lasting aftertaste. Pricks first, when smooth and lingering - yumm - definetly a great one! TChrome (1299), Bedford, Texas, USA
