Cask at JDW Ealing. Black-red with a large fine dark beige head (sparkled). Banana and roasty malt on the nose, vinous dark fruit, treacle, dark chocolate and roast malt on the palate, turning slightly sour-sweet, and then roast-bitter in the finish. A good old ale.

Cask conditioned Handpump Crosse Keys London A nearly black beer with a tightish white head and lacing. The aroma is a little thin but there are notes of caramel and banana. The taste has light roast and some fruit. Again there is some banana and there’s a bit of a dunkelweizen feel to it. A bit of coal kicks in. Would like more roast.

Near black colored with red hints, little beige head. Lemony and hopped yeasty aroma, not very good one. Thin to medium bodied. Flavor is similar with yeasty homemade vinous notes, aftertaste lasts with unconvenient tones.

Cask at The Standing Order, Edinburgh 13 Nov 08. Dark brown – almost black. A small creamy head. Inviting fruity aroma. A bit watery impression but some hints of raisins & prunes. Dry bitter finish.

(500ml Bottle conditioned from Co-op) Pours a lovely dark, almost opaque with a hint of red, beer, which on first smell has a whiff of roasted malt and perhaps liquorice. No head whatsoever which was disappointing, but on first taste a very smooth, fairly rich drink was given. Velvety almost, although finished a little watery for my liking. As I drank more this somewhat dampened my initial expectations for a beer I expected to be livlier.Tastes included a slight bitter chocolate with a sweetness on the tongue. Ok, but fairly unremarkable. had the texture been better I think I may have liked it more. (Cask at the Kings Head, North Lopham, Norfolk) Dark brown red with an off white head. Chocolate roast malt smell with a bit of liquorice. Taste is of chocolate with bread and digestive biscuits. Smooth in the mouth. Better than the bottle, probably a 3.3 or so.

Cask Conditioned at J.D. Wetherspoon - Shakespear’s Head, London
Dark brown color, no head. Light caramel aroma; cheesy. It has a good flavor, some caramel and chocolate, well balanced, in a lean body, with butter and nuts, creamy cookies, mmmh...; correct bitterness. Subtle and very pleasant!
