Jul 17, 2004 Updated: Nov 12, 2006Aroma fairly subtle malt. Nice dark color with good head. Very nice strong malt flavor with the barest hint of molasses/treacle - very little sweetness. Very full palate. Next to no bitterness. An extremely good Schwarzbier. (Drank from bottle at Wuerzburg Hofbrau so this was extremely fresh).

Nov 11, 2004 Can. Dark color with a very thick off-white head. Has a lovely aroma of roasted malts. Flavor is roasty, and sweet. I can really taste the chocolate and coffee. Very smooth finish and quite drinkable.

Jul 3, 2006 Again in Würzburg. The pils was good so I gave the Scharzbier a tumble. Poured nearly black with a big brown head. Nose of heavy malt witih a hint of chocolate and coffee. Very good in the mouth, and smooth going down. A very excellent example of the type.

Sep 11, 2005 Medium-sized creamy head, dark-red almost black clear body. Aroma is sweet and raisin-like. Deep, dry toffee/raisin taste, which in the aftertaste dries up. An excellent schwarzbier. Taste could have lingered longer, though. (0.5l bottle.)

Nov 28, 2002 Thick, black color and a nice heavy roasted malt flavor with hints of chocolate. I like this beer alot.

Aug 8, 2008 (6/21/08) Draught at Thüringer Hof in Leipzig. Black yet not opaque with a medium beige head. Interesting aroma of some smoke, roasted malt, grains and faint hints of coffee. Sweet flavor of malt, caramel, coffee hints and nice roastiness. Finishes slightly drier with some burnt malt. Medium-bodied. I like this one.

Jun 28, 2007 Bottle. Near black with a slight tan head. Strong aroma of dark chocolate and violets with roasted notes. Very smooth in the mouth with dark fruits, more chocolate and a decent dry finish. Very good.
