Nov, 2003I’ve not exactly fallen for the charms of the Black Wych, but she is a little tempting. Smokey, tobacco aroma with some damp coffee grounds; roasty notes in the flavour with a soapy finish. Not a first class example, but much better than I expected from the Wychwood brewery. Mine was from the bottle and so lacks freshness, but it’s damned acceptable. Quite thin bodied - almost like a mild. [3.0]

Bottle (500ml - clear!). Poured a clear, thin-looking dark ruby-brown with an average light brown quick-diminishing head, decent foamy lacing left behind. Bread dough yeast, light chocolate and coffee dark roast malt, a hint of hops, little bit of sour cherry. Taste follows the nose exactly, but starts balanced milk chocolate sweet / hop bitter, finishes more hop bitter with coffee notes dominating. Incredibly thin mouthfeel, not creamy at all ... this is a stout???? Re-rate December 2007 (not clear bottle) - original score 6-3-5-2-12=2.8

Mahogany color that reminds me my old furniture’s (ahh):). There is some aroma that I detected (slightly sweet something). Small head. Mouth fell watery. Light for a stout. Flavor of green leaf with roasted coffee that is easily drinkable but for pros might be disappointing. Label might suggest that is intended for new members of beer world.

Aroma is not just clear bottle import skunky but full on roadkill stuck to your bumper skunk odour. Cracking this open immediately polluted the room with its stench from many feet away. Strong aroma belies the thin watery body and flavour. Appearance is the saving grace on this one.

This brew poured a medium head of fine to medium sized dark tan bubbles that left a nice lacing and a dark brown body with some carbonation rising up the side of the glass. It has very nice malty aroma and an initially mild coffee flavor but finishes with a slight bite, but still very nice all around. It was jJust a bit mild for a great stout.

(4.5% ABV, bottled) Very dark color with bubbly, disappearing, off-white head. Malty aroma with forest mushrooms. Burned, malty and dry flavor with licorice and sweetish aftertaste. Maybe a bit too carbonated and light-bodied for a stout, but not a bad beer by my standards.

(5ooml bottle) Ontario version is 4.5% ABV. Frothy, light beige head with an opaque body. Sweet malt aroma. Taste of pleasant bitter chocolate. Thin. Very thin - hardly a stout? Lacks an aftertaste and complexity of stout. Average.

Bottle, can’t recall where I picked this up from as its been kicking around for some time now. Pours dark brown/black with a thick light brown coloured head. Aroma of roasted malts and some coffee, taste was roasted and did have some chocolate and reasonable bitterness, but overall I found this to be a tad thin and lacking somewhat.
