Commercial Description:
Cask; Regular. Also available bottle conditioned.
Wholesome Stout, which was voted Supreme Champion at the CAMRA Winter Beer Festival 2002 is produced using only the finest ingredients available. They include Pale malt with roasted barley which produces a rich dark colour. Flaked barley is used to create a full and creamy head. The Stout is flavoured with Northdown hops which give a dry resinous taste.

Bottled. Pours a clear dark brown with a scant tan head. Aroma of coffee and molasses. Medium body. Taste of coffee and roasty malt. Dry smoky finish with some hoppy bitterness.

Bottle on 10/22/06. Very dark ruby/black that initially appears opaque but does allow some reddish light through. Aromas of coffee, molasses, and spice are promising. The mouthfeel is slightly oily with a medium body and light carbonation. This is bitter from the start with black coffee, bitter choclate, and spicy, peppery hops, although the hops are subdued compared to the big stouts that are the rage in the US. A nice dry stout, easy to drink and true to style.

Unmistakable label! What a great looking beer. Huge foamy brown head and thick dark body make for a visual delight. Lots and lots of roastiness in the flavor. It definitely translates to the flavor as well. Bitterness is very present as well as some acidity. Flavor is not that subustantial. Body is pretty thin. There is a light zing in the back of the throat but nothing like an Irish.

Thanks to Indra for this one, I believe. Pours a nice black with a large light tan head. Aroma of milk chocolate. Fairly light bodied, nice mix of milk chocolate and gentle roast flavors. Not spectacular, but quite solid. More enjoyable than the score indicates.

(Bottle 50 cl) Pours a clear mahogany with a warm, reddish glow and a dense and frothy, beige head leaving a broad rim of lacework. Aromas dominated by roasted malt and chocolate. Medium body with both roasted and burned malty accents. Also both licorice and chocolate. Bitter, burned finish from the malts. A wholesome stout indeed! Yummy. 240906

Cask (GBBF 2006): Ruby borwn with a lovely hue. Nutty sweet with some roast to back it up. Not bad.
